Merzouga — Sahara. Erg Chebbi’s towering golden dunes and desert camps.
Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of golden dunes rising up to 150 metres — the tallest and most spectacular in Morocco, and the postcard Sahara. It fits into a Royal Morocco Trips journey as the centrepiece of the classic 3-day loop from Marrakech: over the High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley, then a sunset camel trek into the dunes and a night in a desert camp under the stars.
Trip length: 3 days from Marrakech (the realistic minimum for the drive and a camp night); 4–5 days for a deeper, slower desert experience; 2 days if you are already in Merzouga.
Travel rhythm: Long but scenic drive days broken by kasbah and gorge stops, arriving for the sunset camel trek; a camp night with music and stargazing; sunrise over the dunes before the return journey.
Who it suits: Couples, families with children (from about age 5), friends and first-time desert visitors.
Fitness & mobility: Camel treks are optional and camps are reachable by 4x4; walking on dunes is on soft sand. Tell us about mobility needs and we adapt the evening.
What needs confirmation: Camp category, camel trek, transport and dates are confirmed with your booking request before anything is charged.
Yes — Erg Chebbi is genuine Sahara Desert with dunes rising to 150m, covering approximately 50km². The same sand sea extends across Algeria and Libya.
Typically 45–90 minutes each way. The swaying motion takes 10–15 minutes to adjust to; most people find it very comfortable for short rides. Camel height gives excellent panoramic views.
The Erg Chebbi dunes are popular; other camps and camel caravans are visible, especially in peak season. Early morning and late evening are quieter. Our camps are positioned for privacy where possible.
Yes — children aged 4+ can ride camels with a guide alongside. They love the experience. Sun protection, a hat, and closed shoes are essential.
No — most camps in the dunes have no WiFi. Limited phone signal from Merzouga village disappears into the dunes. This is considered a feature by most guests.
October–March: camp nights reach 0–10°C. Bring a warm base layer and sleeping bag liner. April–September: nights are warm (15–22°C) and very comfortable.
Minor sandstorms are rare during our operating season (October–April). If a storm develops, guides move everyone to covered tent areas. Pack electronics in a dry bag as insurance.
Tell us your dates, group and interests and our Marrakech team replies with a tailored proposal. An enquiry is not a confirmed booking — dates, availability, transport, accommodation and final pricing are checked before anything is confirmed.
