Chefchaouen Tours & Things to Do

Chefchaouen — Rif Mountains. The Blue Pearl tucked in the Rif Mountains.

Why visit Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen — the Blue Pearl — is a mountain town in the Rif whose blue-washed medina lanes, spring-fed Ras el-Maa and the Spanish Mosque viewpoint at sunset make it Morocco’s most photogenic small city. It fits into a Royal Morocco Trips journey as a photography tour, a stop on northern loops with Fes and Tangier, or the base for the Rif Mountains trek in our Total Solar Eclipse 2027 itinerary.

Planning your Chefchaouen trip

Trip length: 1–2 days for the medina and viewpoints; 3 days with a Rif or Akchour day hike.

Travel rhythm: Early-morning blue-lane photography before the crowds, slow cafe afternoons, and the walk up to the Spanish Mosque for sunset.

Who it suits: Couples, photographers, families and travellers pairing it with Fes (4 hours) or Tangier.

Fitness & mobility: The medina is steep with many stairs; the Spanish Mosque viewpoint is a 20-minute uphill walk on a paved path.

What needs confirmation: Transport from Fes or Marrakech, guide and any Rif hiking are confirmed with your booking request.

Chefchaouen FAQs

Why is Chefchaouen blue?

The blue-painted medina traces back to the 15th century when Jewish refugees from Spain settled here. Blue was associated with heaven and spiritual protection. The tradition was maintained by subsequent residents and has become the town’s defining identity.

When is the best time for photography?

The first 1–2 hours after sunrise are magical — empty lanes, soft light, vivid blue. Late afternoon golden hour before the Spanish Mosque visit is second best. Our photography tour is timed around these windows.

How long should I spend in Chefchaouen?

A minimum of two nights allows proper exploration of the medina, the Spanish Mosque viewpoint at sunset, and the morning market. Three nights enables a Rif Mountains day hike without rushing.

Is Chefchaouen safe?

Yes — Chefchaouen is one of Morocco’s safest and most welcoming towns for tourists. The main concerns are slippery stairs in the medina when wet and the usual minor hassles near transport hubs.

Can I combine Chefchaouen with Fes?

Easily — Chefchaouen and Fes are 200km apart (4 hours). Many travellers do 2 nights in each on a northern Morocco loop. Buses and grand taxis connect the two towns.
