Chefchaouen Mountain Hiking 2-Day

Destinations: Chefchaouen, Rif Mountains · Duration: 2 days · Difficulty: Moderate · Group size: Up to 10

Most travellers photograph Chefchaouen and leave, never realising it sits at the gateway to some of Morocco’s greenest, most walkable mountains. This two-day trek climbs out of the blue town into the Talassemtane National Park, a world of cedars, springs and waterfalls.

Day one ascends through terraced farmland and forest above Chefchaouen to panoramic ridges, with the blue town shrinking below and the Rif rolling green to the horizon. You overnight in a mountain village, sharing a home-cooked meal with your hosts.

Day two heads to Akchour, where a river trail leads to plunging waterfalls and the extraordinary God’s Bridge, a natural stone arch carved by the water. It is a rewarding, refreshing counterpoint to the medina, and proof that the north is prime hiking country.

Simple and authentic, with shared facilities, warm hospitality and a home-cooked dinner rather than hotel comforts.

They are helpful on the descents but not essential; bring your own if you like using them.

What is the best time of year to take this tour?

April–October for the high peaks (winter summits require crampons and experience). Cool mountain air, strong sun by day and near-freezing nights at altitude.
