The road from Fes to Chefchaouen is a journey through layers of Moroccan history, and this two-day trip makes the most of every kilometre rather than treating it as mere transfer. It links the imperial south with the mountainous, Andalusian-flavoured north.
You leave Fes and climb into the fertile Rif, with a stop to walk the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the sacred hilltown of Moulay Idriss en route — a chance to see empires long before the medinas. Olive groves and hazy peaks accompany you north.
By afternoon you reach Chefchaouen, the famous Blue Pearl, where indigo-washed houses tumble down the hillside. You have the golden evening and the following morning to lose yourself in its photogenic lanes before returning south.
