Erg Chigaga is the largest and most remote dune field in Morocco, reached only by 4x4 across open desert. This four-day tour is for travellers who want the real, untamed Sahara.

Beyond the end of the tarmac at M’Hamid, you cross rocky hammada and sand tracks to the towering dunes of Chigaga, where a desert camp sits in splendid isolation. Nights here are among the darkest and most star-filled you will ever see.

The journey there is an adventure in itself, through kasbahs, oases and the ever-changing colours of the pre-Saharan south.

Dag 1 — 07:30 — Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate (5–6 u)

Vertrek Marrakech 07:30. Hoge Atlas over de Tizi n’Tichka-pas, halt bij Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO-ksar). Overnachting in Ouarzazate.

Dag 2 — Ouarzazate → Draa-vallei → M’Hamid (5–6 u)

Draa-vallei door palmoases en kasbahs naar M’Hamid. 4x4-oversteek 's namiddags naar het Erg Chigaga-kamp (2–3 u). Aankomst bij zonsondergang.

Dag 3 — Erg Chigaga — volle woestijndag

Zonsopgang op de duinen, kamelrit, bezoek aan een nomadefamilie. Fotosessie 's namiddags. Tweede kamp-nacht onder de sterren.

Dag 4 — Erg Chigaga → Zagora (4–5 u rijden + 4x4)

Voormiddag aan de duinen, dan 4x4 terug naar M’Hamid en panoramische rit naar Zagora voor een laatste guesthouse-nacht.

Dag 5 — Zagora → Marrakech via Draa-vallei (7–8 u)

Terugkeer noordwaarts door de palmoase, optionele stop bij het aardewerk van Tamegroute, Atlas-oversteek en aankomst in Marrakech vroeg in de avond.

Desert nights are cool to cold, especially October–March, so bring a warm layer. The camp provides thick blankets, comfortable beds in private tents and en-suite bathrooms with hot water — it is glamping, not roughing it.

What is the best time of year to take this tour?

October–April for comfortable desert days; spring and autumn are ideal. Warm sunny days and cold, star-filled nights; summer midday heat can exceed 40°C. Spring and autumn are the busiest and most beautiful; book early for these months. Summer is quieter inland due to heat, winter quieter on the coast.
