Zagora Tours & Things to Do

Zagora — Draa Valley. Palm groves and the classic gateway to the desert.

Why visit Zagora

Zagora is the closest genuine desert gateway from Marrakech — about 7–8 hours down the Draa Valley, Morocco’s largest palm oasis, famous for its “Timbuktu 52 days” caravan sign. Its dunes are smaller than Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi, but the palm groves, kasbahs and Tamegroute pottery village make the journey itself the experience. It fits into a Royal Morocco Trips journey when you want a desert camp night on a tighter schedule, or as the gateway to the remote Erg Chigaga dunes.

Planning your Zagora trip

Trip length: 2–3 days from Marrakech including the drive and a camp night; longer if continuing to Erg Chigaga.

Zagora FAQs

What is the difference between Zagora and Merzouga?

Zagora is closer to Marrakech (7–8 hours) with smaller dunes and the great Draa palm oasis; Merzouga is further (9–10 hours) but rewards you with the towering Erg Chebbi dunes. Zagora suits tighter schedules; Merzouga suits the classic postcard Sahara.

What is there to see on the way to Zagora?

The route crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stops at the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, passes Ouarzazate and then follows the Draa Valley — a continuous ribbon of palm groves, kasbahs and villages.

Is the camel trek in Zagora a real desert experience?

Yes — you ride into the desert at sunset with a Berber camel handler, spend the night in a camp with dinner, drumming and stargazing, and ride back at sunrise. The dunes are smaller than Erg Chebbi but the night sky is just as vast.
