Aït Ben Haddou — South Morocco. UNESCO-listed earthen ksar seen in countless films.
Aït Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage earthen ksar from the 17th century — a cluster of mud-brick dwellings, towers and ramparts above the Ounila river that has served as a backdrop for films from Lawrence of Arabia to Gladiator and Game of Thrones. It fits into a Royal Morocco Trips journey as the essential guided stop on the Marrakech–Sahara route, on our 2-day Ouarzazate tour, or as a photography stage on desert expeditions.
Trip length: A roughly 2-hour guided walk through the ksar, within a day trip or as a stop on 3–5 day desert tours.
Travel rhythm: Photo stop from across the riverbed, a guided walk through the lanes and granary, then mint tea on a terrace before continuing south.
Who it suits: All ages and travel styles — one of Morocco’s most rewarding short walks.
Fitness & mobility: Ksar paths are earthen, uneven and climb gently to the granary; the riverbed crossing is seasonal. The lower lanes are manageable for most visitors.
What needs confirmation: The guided walk and stop timing are included on the listed tours and confirmed with your booking request.
About two hours — a guided walk through the lanes and up to the granary viewpoint, plus time for the classic photo from across the riverbed. Our tours build it in as a proper stop, not a drive-by.
Yes — the ksar is partly inhabited, with families living in the lower dwellings, while others have moved to the modern village across the river. Your guide explains the ksar’s history and daily life.
Yes — our 2-day Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate tour crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass, walks the ksar, and overnights in Ouarzazate without continuing to the dunes.
