Dades Valley — South Morocco. Winding gorges, kasbahs and rose fields.
The Dades Valley — the “valley of a thousand kasbahs” — winds between eroded monkey-finger rock formations, rose fields around Kelaat M’Gouna and the famous hairpin bends of the gorge road. It fits into a Royal Morocco Trips journey as the classic overnight between the Atlas crossing and the Merzouga dunes on 3–5 day Sahara tours, and as trekking country on our Todra Gorge and Dades Valley trek.
Trip length: One overnight within 3–5 day Sahara itineraries; 2 days for the Todra & Dades trek.
Travel rhythm: Arrive for sunset at the gorge viewpoints, overnight in a valley guesthouse, and continue through the palm groves toward the desert the next morning.
Who it suits: All travellers on desert routes; trekkers get valley and gorge trails.
Fitness & mobility: Viewpoints involve short walks from the road; trekking routes are moderate mountain trails.
What needs confirmation: Guesthouse category and trekking options are confirmed with your booking request.
It sits at the natural midpoint of the Marrakech–Merzouga route — after the Atlas crossing and Aït Ben Haddou, and before the final desert drive — so the long journey is broken into two comfortable days with the gorge and kasbahs to enjoy at sunset.
Eroded rock formations on the valley slopes whose pillars resemble fingers — one of the most photographed stops on the gorge road, best at late-afternoon light.
The rose fields around Kelaat M’Gouna are harvested in spring (typically April–May), when the valley fills with rose-picking and local rose-water production.
