Morocco Travel Mistakes to Avoid (From Local Guides)

The mistakes we see again and again, and how to sidestep them for a smoother Morocco trip.

After years of guiding travellers across Morocco, the same handful of mistakes come up again and again. None of them are dangerous, but each one can dull an otherwise brilliant trip. Here is how to avoid them.

1. Trying to do the Sahara in one or two days

The Erg Chebbi dunes are 9–10 hours from Marrakech. A one- or two-day Sahara trip means you spend almost the entire journey in the car. Plan a minimum of three days, or choose the Agafay desert near Marrakech if you are short on time.

2. Underestimating the desert and mountain cold

Morocco is hot by day but the desert and the Atlas get genuinely cold at night, especially from October to March. Pack a warm layer, a scarf and a hat even if you are travelling in spring.

3. Skipping travel insurance for trekking

Comprehensive travel insurance covering trekking, cycling and mountain rescue is mandatory for active tours and strongly recommended for every traveller. It is not the place to save money.

4. Packing only summer clothes

Layering is the rule. Mornings and evenings are cooler than the midday sun suggests, especially in the mountains and desert. Bring layers you can add and remove through the day.

5. Trying to see everything in a few days

Morocco's variety is its strength, but it is a big country. A focused 7-day loop (Marrakech, the Atlas and the Sahara) is far more enjoyable than a rushed attempt to tick off every imperial city in five days.

6. Not using a licensed guide in the medinas

The Marrakech and Fes medinas are genuine labyrinths. A licensed local guide opens the historical layers, navigates the souk system and shows you the real medina rather than the touristified outer ring.
