The Perfect 7-Day Morocco Itinerary (Marrakech, Atlas & Sahara)

Hassan Ait Baha · 14 min · Itineraries

One week in Morocco is enough for Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains and a Sahara sunset — here is the day-by-day plan with realistic drive times.

Seven days is the ideal first taste of Morocco. It is long enough to experience the country's three signature landscapes — the chaos of Marrakech, the quiet of the Atlas Mountains, and the vastness of the Sahara — without spending half your trip in transit. This itinerary is the route we recommend to most first-time visitors, and it can be run as a private tour with a dedicated driver-guide throughout.

Day 1 — Arrive in Marrakech

Arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport and transfer to your riad inside the medina. Spend the first evening at Jemaa el-Fnaa, the great square that comes alive after dark with food stalls, storytellers, musicians and snake charmers. Have your first tagine on a rooftop terrace overlooking the square and ease into the rhythm of the city.

Day 2 — Marrakech Medina & Souks

A full day exploring the medina with a licensed local guide: the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs and the Ben Youssef Madrasa. Wander the souks by trade — leather, spices, lanterns, textiles — and stop at a traditional hammam in the late afternoon. A guided medina tour is the most efficient way to orient yourself and avoid getting lost.

Day 3 — Atlas Mountains Day Trip

Head 90 minutes south to Imlil in the High Atlas for a day hike through Berber villages with a mountain guide, or take the easier Ourika Valley route with its waterfalls and riverside cafes. Return to Marrakech in the evening. This is the perfect contrast to the city and a gentle introduction to Atlas trekking.

Days 4–6 — The Sahara Loop to Merzouga

Depart Marrakech on the classic three-day Sahara loop. Day 4 crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass and the UNESCO ksar of Ait Ben Haddou to the Dades Valley. Day 5 continues through Todra Gorge to Merzouga, where a sunset camel trek carries you into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a night in a desert camp. Day 6 closes with sunrise over the dunes and the return journey to Marrakech.

Day 7 — Departure

A final morning in Marrakech for last-minute souk shopping, a visit to the Majorelle Garden, or simply breakfast on your riad's rooftop. Transfer to the airport for your departure. If your flight is late in the day, an Agafay desert sunset dinner makes a memorable final evening before an evening transfer.

What to Budget

A private 7-day version of this itinerary runs approximately $900–1,400 per person (mid-range riads, private driver-guide, guided tours, desert camp, most meals on the desert leg). Budget group departures cost less; luxury riads and a private luxury desert camp add meaningfully to the total. International flights are not included.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for Morocco?

Yes. Seven days is the sweet spot for a first trip covering Marrakech, a taste of the High Atlas and an overnight Sahara desert experience. You will move at a comfortable pace without rushing. Add a second week only if you want to include Fes, Chefchaouen and the Atlantic coast.

How much does a 7-day Morocco trip cost?

A mid-range private 7-day trip runs roughly $900–1,400 per person including private transport, riad accommodation, guided tours and the desert camp. Budget group travel can come in lower; luxury riads and private luxury camps push the total higher. International flights are extra.

What is the best time for a 7-day Morocco trip?

March to May and September to November offer the most comfortable weather across Marrakech, the Atlas and the desert. Avoid July and August for the desert and lowland cities — the heat is extreme. Winter is fine but desert and mountain nights are cold.

Do I need a guide for this itinerary?

A licensed guide is recommended for the medina of Marrakech and is required for any Toubkal or Atlas trekking. For the Sahara loop, a driver-guide removes all logistics and lets you enjoy the scenery. We arrange all of the above.

Can this itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. Every itinerary we build is private and tailor-made. Tell us your dates, interests and budget through our plan-my-trip form and we will adjust this route around you.
