Fez el-Bali is the world's oldest continuously inhabited medina — a labyrinth of tanneries, madrasas and living craft.
The Fez medina — Fes el-Bali — is the world's oldest continuously inhabited medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site of nearly 10,000 alleys where life has carried on much as it has for a thousand years. It is denser, older and more labyrinthine than Marrakech, a place of tanneries, madrasas, copper-smiths and dye-vats that still work as they did in the Middle Ages. For anyone interested in Moroccan culture and craft, Fez is the essential city.
Founded in 789 and expanded in the 9th century, Fes el-Bali became Morocco's spiritual, cultural and intellectual capital — a role it still holds. It is entirely car-free, home to some 150,000 people, and organised by trade in a pattern that has barely changed. Walking it is like stepping into a functioning medieval city.
The Chouara Tannery is Fez's most famous sight — a grid of stone vats where hides are soaked in lime, then dyed by hand using natural pigments (indigo for blue, poppy for red, saffron for yellow). It is viewed from the terraces of surrounding leather shops, usually free with a tip. Morning light shows the dye pits at their most vivid; a sprig of mint helps with the smell. Our Fez Medina Cultural Tour includes a proper guided visit, and our leather-tanning workshop lets you try the craft.
Fez's souks are organised by craft: the coppersmiths' Seffarine Square rings with hammering, the dyers' souk hangs with coloured yarn, the carpenters' quarter turns cedar into painted ceilings. Unlike Marrakech, Fez leans toward genuine working craft rather than tourist trinkets — it is the better city for serious buyers of leather, metalwork and ceramics.
Above the medina, the ruined Merenid Tombs offer the best sunset panorama over the entire old city — a sea of minarets and rooftops backed by the hills. Borj Nord, a 16th-century fort, holds an arms museum. Both are a short climb or taxi ride from the medina walls.
Staying in a medina riad in Fez is the authentic experience — converted courtyard houses deep in Fes el-Bali, often with rooftop terraces overlooking the sea of minarets. The Ville Nouvelle offers modern hotels for those who prefer wider streets and easier parking. A two-night stay gives you time for a full guided medina day plus a relaxed second day.
Our Fez Medina Cultural Tour covers the tanneries, madrasas and artisan quarters in a single guided day, and the Fez Medina Deep Dive 2-Day adds workshops and the Merenid Tombs. Both can be built into any northern Morocco itinerary — tell us your dates via the plan-my-trip form.
Fes el-Bali was founded in the 9th century and is widely considered the world's oldest continuously inhabited medina. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to around 150,000 people in a car-free labyrinth of 9,000+ alleys.
Yes. The Chouara Tannery is viewable from surrounding leather-shop rooftops, usually free with a polite tip. Morning light gives the best view of the dye pits. Our Fez Medina Cultural Tour and leather-tanning workshop include proper guided access.
Strongly recommended. The Fez medina is genuinely maze-like — far more so than Marrakech — and a licensed guide turns it from disorienting to captivating, taking you straight to the tanneries, madrasas and best workshops.
The Chouara Tannery, Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Qarawiyyin (the world's oldest continually operating university), the Merenid Tombs for sunset views, and the artisan quarters of the souks.
Yes. Fez is safe and welcoming. The main challenge is navigation, not security. Stick to lit lanes at night, save an offline map, and use a guide on a first visit to get oriented.
