Fes has worked leather for over a thousand years, and this workshop takes you beyond the tannery viewpoint into the craft itself. You learn how hide becomes the supple, colourful leather Morocco is famous for, then make something with it.
After an insider look at the tanning and natural dyeing process, you move to a leatherworker’s atelier. Here you choose your leather and, guided by a master, cut, punch, stitch and finish a piece — perhaps a small bag, pouch or pair of babouche.
Working the leather by hand gives you a deep respect for the skill behind every market stall, and a genuinely useful object to take home. It is craft tourism at its most tactile and rewarding.

You view the tanneries from the terraces and learn the process; the making happens in a clean atelier.

Finished leather has a mild natural scent; the strong tannery aroma stays at the pits, which you only view.
The craft uses animal leather; if you prefer, we can discuss the process without the making, though the workshop centres on leather.
Return transfers to Fes. Roads are sealed national roads and well-kept regional routes, and we build in regular photo and comfort stops so the journey is part of the experience. Exact drive times depend on your route and pace and are confirmed with your booking.

March–May and September–November for the most pleasant weather. Hot dry summers and mild winters with cool evenings. Spring and autumn are the busiest and most beautiful; book early for these months. Summer is quieter inland due to heat, winter quieter on the coast.
