Destinations: Fes · Duration: 2 days · Difficulty: Easy · Group size: Up to 10
A single day barely scratches the surface of Fes el-Bali, a labyrinth of some nine thousand lanes that has functioned continuously for over a thousand years. This two-day deep dive gives the world’s greatest medieval medina the time it deserves.
Rather than racing between headline sights, you move slowly, quarter by quarter, learning how the medina is organised around its guilds, mosques, fondouks and fountains. Your guide, steeped in the city’s history, opens doors most visitors walk past and explains the logic behind the apparent chaos.
Day one traces the spiritual and scholarly heart around the Qarawiyyin, the world’s oldest university; day two turns to craft and commerce, from the tanneries to the brass and ceramic quarters. You leave able to navigate, read and appreciate Fes as few visitors ever do.
Explore the Qarawiyyin quarter, Bou Inania and Attarine madrasas, the Nejjarine fountain and the scholarly lanes, with a rooftop lunch.
Discover the tanneries, brass souk, ceramic workshops and old caravanserais, ending on a panoramic viewpoint.
Fes el-Bali is vast and dense; two days lets you understand its structure and see its craft quarters properly rather than a rushed loop.
Not with your guide, who knows the maze intimately. By day two you will even start to recognise your own way around.
Non-Muslims cannot enter the prayer hall but can view the courtyard and library area, which your guide fully explains.
Yes, staying within the walls lets you experience the medina after the day-trippers leave, which is magical.
A good deal, over uneven and sometimes steep lanes, but the pace is relaxed with frequent stops and tea breaks.
