Everything you need to know before your Sahara desert adventure — camel trekking, camp life, seasons and booking.
Merzouga for the towering postcard dunes; Zagora if you are short on time. Context: Erg Chebbi near Merzouga has dunes that rise up to 150m — the iconic Sahara landscape — but it is further from Marrakech (9–10 hours). Zagora is closer (around 7 hours) with more modest dunes. Both deliver camel trekking, camps and extraordinary night skies.

About 9–10 hours of driving each way over the High Atlas — which is why 3 days is the comfortable minimum. Context: the journey is part of the experience, broken up with the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the gorges. A 2-day version spends almost the entire trip in the car.

No — the standard sunset camel ride into camp is gentle, usually 45–90 minutes. Context: the mount and dismount take a few minutes to get used to, and loose clothing helps. Multi-hour riding is a different proposition, but our standard treks keep rides short and scenic.
Traditional camps offer Berber-style tents, mattresses, blankets, shared facilities and a communal dinner around the fire; luxury camps offer proper beds, private bathrooms and a far more comfortable night. Context: both include dinner, music and a spectacular stargazing sky. The camp standard on your journey is confirmed in your proposal before anything is booked.

October to April — warm days, cold nights and the clearest skies. Context: October–November and March–April are the sweet spots; January nights can drop to near freezing but the sky is extraordinary. Summer daytime temperatures in the desert are extreme, so summer itineraries shift to the coast and high mountains.
Loose long sleeves, a scarf or shesh for sun and sand, closed shoes for the camel ride, a warm layer for the night, a headtorch and a water bottle. Context: desert nights cool sharply after sunset — even in summer the camp night is cooler than you expect. Electronics benefit from a dry bag against fine sand.
From October to March, yes — nights at camp are cold, often single figures Celsius. Context: camps provide blankets, but bring a warm base layer and consider a sleeping bag liner on standard camps. From April to September nights are mild.
In Merzouga village, yes; at camps deep in the dunes, typically no. Context: most guests treat the offline night as a feature. Established camps provide basic power for phone charging.
Yes — Sahara journeys run as private departures with your own guide and driver, on your dates. Context: private journeys are quoted individually for your group; group departures on scheduled dates are the lower-cost shared option. Tell us which you prefer in your booking request.

Yes — the camel ride, the campfire and the dunes are usually the highlights of a family trip. Context: the main planning consideration is the long drive (9–10 hours each way from Marrakech), which a family itinerary spreads with stops. Ensure children have sun protection, a hat and closed shoes for the camel ride, and tell us their ages so pacing is built around them.
The Tizi n’Tichka pass, the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and the Todra or Dades gorges, depending on the itinerary. Context: the route through the High Atlas and the Draa Valley palm groves is a genuine part of the experience rather than a transfer — one more reason the 3-day version is worth it.
Aït Ben Haddou day trip · 3-Day Merzouga tour
Yes, with an experienced guide and sensible preparation. Context: the manageable risks are heat, dehydration and sandstorms — handled with pacing, water and local knowledge. Our journeys are guided throughout, and if desert conditions require a route or timing adjustment, we discuss it with you before anything changes.
Yes — solo travellers are welcome on group departures, which pair you with a small shared group. Context: sharing transport and a camp is the lower-cost and more social way to do the desert solo; a fully private departure is also possible and is quoted individually.

One night in the dunes — as part of a 3-day loop — delivers the essential experience; two nights slow it down. Context: the sunset camel trek, dinner under the stars and sunrise over the dunes are the moments people remember. Our 4–5 day journeys add a second desert night and deeper exploration.
Itineraries by length · Multi-day Morocco tours
Yes — Erg Chebbi is part of the genuine Sahara, with dunes rising up to 150m. Context: it is the same sand sea that extends across into Algeria, roughly 50km² of it, and the landscape is exactly as dramatic as the photographs suggest.
