Mount Toubkal — High Atlas. North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167m.
Mount Toubkal (4,167m) is the highest peak in North Africa and the Arab World, rising directly above the Berber village of Imlil just 90 minutes from Marrakech. The standard summer route is a non-technical scramble — no ropes or climbing experience — which makes it one of the most accessible 4,000m summits in the world. It fits into a Royal Morocco Trips journey as a focused 2-day summit trek, a gentler 3-day acclimatisation trek, or as the mountain stage of a longer Atlas and Sahara itinerary.
Trip length: 2 days for the classic summit trek; 3 days with acclimatisation; 4–5 days with Berber village overnights. Day hikes from Imlil suit travellers not attempting the summit.
Travel rhythm: Day one climbs steadily to the refuge; summit day starts pre-dawn and descends all the way back to Imlil the same day.
Who it suits: Fit adults, friends and couples; families with teenagers who already hike regularly. Not suitable for young children.
Fitness & mobility: Steep, rocky mountain trails with 600–900m of daily ascent. Requires stiff hiking boots and good cardiovascular fitness; not suitable for travellers with limited mobility.
What needs confirmation: Refuge availability, mountain guide, weather and snow conditions (crampons and ice axe in winter) are confirmed with your booking request before anything is charged.
Yes — with adequate fitness preparation. The summer route is a non-technical scramble completed by many first-time trekkers each season. The key requirements are fitness, stiff hiking boots, and an experienced mountain guide.
Comfortable walking 5–7 hours with 600–800m elevation gain per day. Regular hiking or cycling 3–4 times weekly for 8 weeks is ideal preparation.
Stiff-soled hiking boots with ankle support are mandatory — trail running shoes are not suitable for the scree slopes above the refuge. In winter, mountaineering boots with crampons are required.
The refuge at 3,207m is cold year-round. Overnight temperatures October–March are typically -5 to -15°C. A warm sleeping bag or good thermal layers are essential. The refuge provides blankets but a sleeping bag or liner is recommended.
No — the standard route from Imlil to the summit and back is a 2-day minimum (overnight at refuge). Single-day attempts are dangerous due to altitude gain and are not permitted on our guided treks.
Drink 3–4 litres of water per day. High-carbohydrate snacks (dates, nuts, energy bars) sustain energy. The guide provides meals at guesthouses and the refuge.
Yes — policies must include mountain rescue and helicopter evacuation above 4,000m. Standard travel insurance often excludes high-altitude trekking; check your policy explicitly.
Your mountain guide monitors conditions and makes all safety decisions. If summit conditions are dangerous, the guide will recommend shelter or descent. Safety takes absolute priority.
