Toubkal or Mgoun? A detailed comparison of Morocco's two highest treks — difficulty, duration, scenery, crowds, guides and costs.
Toubkal and Mgoun are Morocco's two highest peaks, and the choice between them is the classic decision for experienced trekkers. They are only 96 metres apart in height but completely different in style — Toubkal is a short, intense, popular summit; Mgoun is a long, remote, quiet traverse. This comparison breaks down the real differences to help you choose.
Per day, both are strenuous — long uphill days at altitude. But Mgoun is the bigger commitment: 5-7 consecutive days, river crossings through gorges, and no quick exit once you are on the ridge. Toubkal is intense but over in 2-3 days with an easy exit back to Imlil. For most trekkers, Toubkal first, then Mgoun when you want more.
Toubkal fits a weekend — 2 days, or 3 with the Azzaden acclimatisation route. Mgoun needs a full week and is a point-to-point traverse between valleys, requiring vehicle transfers at each end. Toubkal is the obvious choice if you have limited time; Mgoun rewards a bigger time investment.
Both are spectacular but different. Toubkal gives you a single iconic summit with views across the Atlas and toward the Sahara. Mgoun gives you a high ridge walk, dramatic gorges (the M'Goun gorge river-walk is a highlight), summer pastures and Berber valleys — more variety and more immersion in the range.
The biggest difference. Toubkal is Morocco's most popular trek and can be busy on autumn weekends, with a crowded refuge. Mgoun sees a fraction of the trekkers — you may have the entire ridge to yourself. If solitude matters, Mgoun wins decisively.
Toubkal suits fit trekkers, including determined first-timers on the 3-day route. Mgoun is for experienced trekkers with strong endurance, sure footing and wilderness comfort — not a first trek. Be honest about your experience before choosing Mgoun.
Per day, both run $130-200 per person all-in. Toubkal is cheaper in total ($180-360 for 2-3 days) because it is shorter. Mgoun costs more overall ($650-1,400 for 5-7 days) but delivers a longer expedition. Choose by experience and time, not price.

Toubkal is higher at 4,167 m — North Africa's highest peak. Mgoun is 4,071 m, Morocco's second-highest. The 96 m difference is negligible; the real difference is the trek style, not the altitude.
Mgoun is harder as a trek — it is a 5-7 day wilderness traverse with long days, river crossings and no easy exit. Toubkal is a 2-3 day summit trek that is intense but short. Per day they are similar; in total commitment, Mgoun is the bigger challenge.
Mgoun, by a wide margin. Toubkal is Morocco's most popular trek and can be busy on autumn weekends. Mgoun sees a fraction of the trekkers — you may have the ridge to yourself. Choose Mgoun for solitude.
No — Mgoun is for experienced trekkers with strong endurance and wilderness comfort. Beginners should start with Toubkal (ideally the 3-day route) and progress to Mgoun later.
Per day they are similar ($130-200 per person per day all-in). Toubkal is cheaper in total because it is shorter. Mgoun costs more overall but delivers a longer, more immersive expedition. Choose by experience and time, not price.
