Morocco Rose Festival & Valley of Roses: Complete Guide

Each April, the Valley of Roses blooms and Kelaat M'Gouna celebrates with the Rose Festival — fragrance, music and rosewater.

Each April, the Valley of Roses in southern Morocco bursts into bloom, and the town of Kelaat M'Gouna celebrates with the Rose Festival — a fragrant, joyful event of Berber music, a rose queen procession, and rosewater distilled from the Damask roses that carpet the valley. It is one of Morocco's most distinctive festivals and a wonderful reason to visit the Dades Valley in spring.

The Dades Valley and Valley of Roses region, southern Morocco

The Valley of Roses

The Valley of Roses lies in the Dades Valley region around Kelaat M'Gouna, where Damask roses (Rosa damascena) are cultivated in irrigated fields along the river. The roses were introduced centuries ago and are now distilled into rosewater and rose oil for cosmetics, perfume and food. The harvest is labour-intensive — roses are picked by hand at dawn when their oil is most concentrated — and the cooperatives are the economic heart of the valley.

The Rose Festival

The Kelaat M'Gouna Rose Festival, held in April or early May, celebrates the harvest with Berber music and dance, a rose queen procession, a market for rosewater and rose products, and the spectacle of the blooming valley. It is an authentic local celebration — fragrant, colourful and joyful — and a wonderful cultural experience for visitors. Our Morocco Rose Festival Tour 2-Day is timed for it.

The Rose Harvest & Cooperatives

The rose harvest runs through April. Roses are picked by hand at dawn and taken to the cooperatives for distillation — a process visitors can observe, with rosewater and rose oil for sale directly from the producers. Buying from the cooperatives ensures the women who do the picking and distilling receive a fair income. A cooperative visit is a highlight of any Valley of Roses trip.

Combining the Roses with the Dades & Todra

The Valley of Roses sits on the standard Sahara route, between Ouarzazate and the Todra Gorge. A rose-festival trip pairs naturally with the Dades Gorge (the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" and its famous switchbacks), the Todra Gorge, and Aït Ben Haddou. Our Todra Gorge & Dades Valley Trek and Kasbah Route 4-Day cover the region.

When to Visit

April is the bloom and festival month — the time to visit. The exact festival dates vary each year with the bloom, so check before booking. A non-festival April visit still offers bloom, cooperatives and the dramatic Dades Gorge scenery. Outside April, the cooperatives operate year-round but the fields are not in bloom.

Plan Your Rose Festival Trip

Rose festival trips need early booking — Kelaat M'Gouna accommodation is limited and fills for the festival. Tell us your dates via the plan-my-trip form and we will build an itinerary around the festival and the Valley of Roses, with the Dades and Todra gorges and a Sahara desert extension if you wish.
