Mgoun Massif Trekking Guide: High-Altitude Trek & Berber Villages

Hassan Ait Baha · 13 min · Trekking

Mgoun (4,071 m) is Morocco's second-highest peak — a wild high-altitude traverse through Berber valleys and gorges, for experienced trekkers.

The Mgoun Massif is the wilder, bigger sibling of Toubkal — a high-altitude range in the central High Atlas centred on Mgoun (4,071 m), Morocco's second-highest peak. Where Toubkal is a weekend summit, Mgoun is a genuine expedition: a 5-7 day traverse along a high ridge between Berber valleys, through summer pastures and dramatic gorges, with barely another trekker in sight. For experienced trekkers who have done Toubkal and want the next challenge, Mgoun is the obvious choice. This guide covers the route, the difficulty, and the logistics.

The high Atlas ridge — Mgoun traverse country, Morocco's second-highest range

The Traverse

The classic Mgoun trek crosses the massif between the Ait Bougmez ("Happy Valley") and the M'Goun valleys over 5-7 days. You climb to the high ridge (around 3,600-3,800 m), follow it toward the summit, and descend through dramatic gorges — the Tighremt n'Ait Ahmed and the M'Goun gorges — to finish in the valleys below. It is a point-to-point wilderness traverse, not an up-and-down summit trip.

The Summit

Mgoun's summit (4,071 m) is reached from the high ridge — a long, gradual climb rather than a technical push. The views from the top stretch across the entire central Atlas. The altitude is serious enough to demand acclimatisation; the gradual ridge approach helps, but build in acclimatisation days and be ready to descend if symptoms appear.

The Gorges

A highlight of the Mgoun trek is the gorge section — walking through narrow, dramatic canyons where the river has cut through the limestone. The M'Goun gorge in particular is a spectacular river-walk, sometimes waist-deep in the meltwater season. Bring shoes you can get wet, and time the gorge section for the morning when water levels are lower.

Difficulty & Fitness

Strenuous. This is a multi-day high-altitude traverse with long days (6-8 hours), remote conditions, river crossings and no easy exit. You need strong endurance, sure footing, comfort with wilderness, and proper acclimatisation. It is harder than Toubkal and should not be a first trek. Train specifically for several weeks beforehand.

Accommodation

A mix of mountain refuges (the Tarkeddit refuge near the summit base), Berber gite homestays in the valleys, and camping on the high sections with mule-supported tents. Your guide arranges everything and a cook handles meals on the camping nights.

Guides & Costs

A licensed guide with mule support is essential. A 5-7 day Mgoun traverse runs $130-200 per person per day all-in, including the guide, muleteers, refuge and gite nights, camping equipment, and all meals. It is a significant investment but a genuine expedition.

Best Time

May to October for snow-free conditions. May and June are ideal — wildflowers, melting snow feeding the gorges, and stable weather. September is also excellent. Winter is a serious mountaineering route requiring full winter gear and experience.

Frequently asked questions

How high is Mgoun?

Mgoun (Ighil M'Goun) is 4,071 m — Morocco's second-highest peak after Toubkal. It is the centrepiece of a high-altitude massif in the central High Atlas, east of the Toubkal range.

How long is the Mgoun trek?

A typical traverse runs 5-7 days, crossing the massif between the Ait Bougmez and M'Goun valleys via the high ridge and the summit. Shorter 3-4 day sections are possible, but the full traverse is the classic experience.

Is the Mgoun trek harder than Toubkal?

Yes — it is a longer, more remote multi-day traverse at high altitude, with no easy exit once you are on the ridge. You need strong endurance, sure footing and comfort with wilderness conditions. Toubkal is a weekend; Mgoun is an expedition.

Do I need a guide for Mgoun?

Absolutely — the massif is remote, paths are unmarked, water sources and refuges need local knowledge, and there is no quick exit. A licensed guide with mule support is essential for safety and logistics.

When is the best time to trek Mgoun?

May to October for snow-free conditions. Spring and early summer are ideal, with wildflowers and melting snow feeding the gorges. Winter is a serious mountaineering proposition requiring full winter gear and experience.
