Four days Marrakech to Chefchaouen via the coast and Rabat — a relaxed northern route to the Blue City.
Getting from Marrakech to Chefchaouen is a long journey — there is no direct train, and the Blue City sits in the far north. This 4-day itinerary turns that transfer into a rewarding road trip, breaking the 600+ km drive with stops at Essaouira, Rabat and Tangier before arriving in Chefchaouen. It is the relaxed northern route for travellers who want the journey to be part of the experience.
Leave Marrakech and drive 2.5–3 hours west to Essaouira, stopping at a women's argan cooperative. A guided medina walk, the Skala ramparts and a harbour seafood lunch. Overnight in an Essaouira riad — the perfect relaxed start to the northward journey.
Drive north along the Atlantic coast to Rabat, Morocco's laid-back capital. Visit the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the Andalusian Gardens. Overnight in Rabat.
Continue north to Tangier, the port city at the Strait of Gibraltar. Explore the medina, the Kasbah Museum and the Corniche. Overnight in Tangier, with views across to Spain on a clear day.
A 2-hour drive south-east into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, the Blue City. Arrive by lunchtime and spend the afternoon wandering the blue lanes. An overnight (or two) lets you see the medina in the quiet morning light — the whole point of visiting Chefchaouen.
We run this as a 4-day private tour starting in Marrakech and ending in Chefchaouen, with all transport, riads and guided tours included. Tell us your dates via the plan-my-trip form.
A private 4-day version runs approximately $600–950 per person (private driver-guide, riad accommodation, guided tours). The long route makes transport the main cost. International flights are not included.
There is no direct train. The scenic route is Marrakech → Essaouira or Casablanca → Rabat → Tangier → Chefchaouen by private transfer or a mix of train and grand taxi, about 2 days of travel. A 4-day itinerary lets you break the journey with worthwhile stops.
A mid-range private 4-day trip runs roughly $600–950 per person including private driver-guide, riad accommodation and guided tours. The route is long (600+ km) so transport is the main cost. Flights are extra.
Marrakech → Essaouira (night 1) → Rabat (night 2) → Tangier (night 3) → Chefchaouen (day 4). It breaks the long drive with coastal and capital stops. A faster route runs via Casablanca and the train.
A domestic flight Marrakech to Tangier (if available) saves a day of driving, then a 2-hour transfer to Chefchaouen. For a road trip with stops, the 4-day overland route is more rewarding. We can arrange either.
Yes — we build it as a private, tailor-made tour with a dedicated driver-guide and hand-picked riads. Add a Fez stop or an Akchour waterfalls hike. Tell us your dates via the plan-my-trip form.
