Chefchaouen to Fez 2-Day Itinerary: Mountain & Culture

Omar Benali · 9 min · Itineraries

Two days Chefchaouen to Fez via Volubilis — a mountain and Roman-ruins route to the imperial city.

This 2-day Chefchaouen-to-Fez itinerary turns a 4-hour transfer into a rewarding mountain-and-culture route, adding the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial city of Meknes. It is the ideal way to travel from the Blue City to the imperial city, pairing Chefchaouen's blue lanes with Roman history and the world's oldest medina.

Day 1 — Chefchaouen to Volubilis & Meknes

A morning departure from Chefchaouen. Drive south through the Rif to Volubilis, the UNESCO Roman site with stunning mosaics and columns — the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. Continue to Meknes, the imperial city, for a guided visit of the Bab el-Mansour gate and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Overnight in Meknes or continue to Fez.

Day 2 — Fez Medina

A full guided day in the Fez medina — the Chouara Tannery, Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Qarawiyyin and the Merenid Tombs for sunset. A licensed guide is essential here; the medina is genuinely maze-like. The tour ends in Fez — extend with a cooking class, a hammam or a Sahara desert loop.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get from Chefchaouen to Fez?

About 200 km, a 3.5–4 hour drive through the Rif Mountains. A 2-day itinerary lets you add the Roman ruins of Volubilis and imperial Meknes rather than just transferring. A direct transfer is faster but less rewarding.

How much does a 2-day Chefchaouen-to-Fez trip cost?

A mid-range private 2-day trip runs roughly $300–500 per person including private driver-guide, riad accommodation, Volubilis entry and a guided Fez medina start. Flights are extra.

What is the route for 2 days Chefchaouen to Fez?

Chefchaouen → Volubilis Roman ruins & Meknes (night 1, Meknes or Fez) → Fez medina guided day (day 2). It pairs the Blue City, Roman history and the imperial city.

Is Volubilis worth a stop?

Yes — Volubilis is a UNESCO Roman site with stunning mosaics and columns, the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. It is a 30-minute detour from the Chefchaouen-Fez road and a highlight for anyone interested in history.

Can this 2-day route be customised?

Yes — we build it as a private, tailor-made tour with a dedicated driver-guide and hand-picked riads. Add a Meknes overnight or a Fez cooking class. Tell us your dates via the plan-my-trip form.
