Boumalne Dades & Dades Valley Town: Complete Guide

Leila Fassi · 9 min · Destinations

Boumalne Dades is the gateway to the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs — gorges, kasbahs and rose country.

Boumalne Dades is the gateway to the Dades Valley — the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs", a dramatic landscape of red-rock gorges, mud-brick kasbahs, rose fields and Berber villages that stretches from Ouarzazate to the Atlas. For travellers on the Sahara route, it is a natural overnight stop and one of the most photogenic stretches of road in Morocco.

The dramatic Dades Gorge and valley in southern Morocco

The Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs

The Dades Valley earned its nickname from the density of kasbahs — fortified earthen houses — that dot its banks, many still inhabited. The drive from Boumalne up the valley is a procession of red mud-brick towers against green palm groves and red canyon walls, especially beautiful in the late-afternoon light. It is one of the most photographed roads in Morocco.

The Dades Gorge & Monkey Fingers

Above Boumalne, the Dades river has cut a dramatic gorge with sheer red walls. The road climbs in a famous series of switchbacks (the "Monkey Fingers" or "Fingers of the Monkey" rock formations are nearby) offering one of Morocco's most photographed vistas. A walk along the gorge floor and a stop at the switchback viewpoint are the standard highlights.

Rose Country

The Dades Valley borders the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M'Gouna, where Damask roses are cultivated for perfume and rosewater. In April, the valley blooms and the annual Rose Festival celebrates the harvest with music, dancing and a rose queen. Our Morocco Rose Festival Tour 2-Day is timed for the season.

Berber Villages & Kasbahs

The valley's Berber villages — Aït Youl, Tamdalilt, others — are clusters of mud-brick houses and kasbahs terraced into the valley walls, many still family-owned and lived in. A walk through a village, with tea in a family home, offers a direct window into southern Moroccan life. Our Todra Gorge & Dades Valley Trek includes village walks.

Where to Stay

Boumalne and the upper valley have a range of kasbah-style guesthouses, many in restored kasbahs with gardens and pools overlooking the gorge. Staying overnight lets you photograph the switchbacks at sunrise and walk the gorge before the day-trip crowds. Our Dades-Todra Gorges 3-Day includes a valley overnight.

Combining Dades with the Sahara

The Dades Valley sits on the standard Marrakech-to-Merzouga route, usually visited on day 1 of a 3-day desert tour, between Aït Benhaddou and the Todra Gorge. It pairs naturally with Ouarzazate, Todra Gorge and the Erg Chebbi dunes. For a valley-focused trip, our Todra Gorge & Dades Valley Trek explores both gorges in depth.

How to Book

Our Dades-Todra Gorges 3-Day and Todra Gorge & Dades Valley Trek cover the region. Tell us your dates and whether you want a Sahara loop or a valley-focused trek via the plan-my-trip form, and we will build the right route through the Dades Valley.
