October to April is the sweet spot for the Sahara. Here is how each season shapes up for a desert tour.
The Sahara is a desert in the literal sense, and the season you choose changes the experience completely. Get it right and you get warm days, cold star-filled nights and extraordinary light; get it wrong and the midday heat is genuinely punishing.
October through April is the sweet spot for a Sahara desert tour. Daytime temperatures are warm and comfortable (20–28°C), the nights are cold (often near freezing from December to February), and the light at sunrise and sunset is at its best. This is when camel treks, dune walks and desert camps are most enjoyable.
Whatever the season, desert nights are much colder than you expect. Bring a warm layer and a scarf, sun protection for the day, a head torch and closed shoes plus sandals. A refillable water bottle and a power bank are essential — there is no electricity in the dunes.
