Morocco's best treks for experienced hikers — Mgoun and Saghro traverses, the Azzaden circuit and winter Toubkal, with fitness needs and costs.
If you have already done Toubkal or trekked in other mountain ranges, Morocco has far more to offer than the standard weekend summit. The country's real trekking rewards — high-altitude traverses, remote desert-mountain expeditions and winter mountaineering — are for experienced trekkers who want solitude and a genuine challenge. This guide covers the best Morocco treks for experienced trekkers, the fitness they demand, and how to plan them.
The headline. A 5-7 day traverse of Morocco's second-highest range (4,071 m), following a high ridge between the Ait Bougmez and M'Goun valleys, through dramatic gorges and summer pastures. Long days, high altitude, river crossings and no easy exit. The best standard trek in Morocco for experienced hikers.
A 5-7 day winter desert-mountain traverse through volcanic terrain and Ait Atta nomadic lands. Not high-altitude but genuinely remote, with long days and no road access for days. The best winter expedition when the High Atlas is snowbound.
A 4-5 day traverse of the quiet side of the Toubkal massif, crossing the Tizi Ouanoums pass (3,684 m) with an optional Toubkal summit. Less crowded than the direct route and a good step up in commitment for trekkers who have done the 2-day Toubkal.
From November to April, Toubkal becomes a mountaineering route requiring crampons, an ice axe and winter skills. A completely different and more serious proposition than the summer trek — only for experienced winter mountaineers with a qualified guide.
Remote volcano and desert-edge treks for those who have done everything else. Quiet, culturally rich and genuinely off the beaten path, with full wilderness camping.
Train specifically for 6+ weeks: loaded hill or stair climbs building to multiple long days, plus cardio and leg strength. Break in your boots. For winter routes, practise crampon and ice-axe technique beforehand. Read the route descriptions carefully and be honest about whether a traverse suits your experience.
A licensed guide with mule support is essential on all these routes — even for experienced trekkers, the unmarked paths and remote conditions make self-guided trekking unsafe. Advanced treks run $130-200 per person per day all-in. Winter mountaineering and specialist climbing guides cost more.
May to October for Mgoun, Azzaden and the high routes. October to April for Saghro, Sirwa and Tazarwine. November to March for winter Toubkal (with mountaineering skills). Match the range to the season — see our best time to trek guide for the full breakdown.
We run guided advanced treks — Mgoun, Saghro, Azzaden, Sirwa and winter Toubkal — with licensed specialist guides. Tell us your experience, fitness and dates, and we'll match you to the right route through our plan-my-trip form.
The Mgoun massif traverse — a 5-7 day high-altitude ridge walk across Morocco's second-highest range, through gorges and Berber valleys, with barely another trekker. It is the natural next step after Toubkal.
A winter Toubkal ascent (requiring crampons, ice axe and mountaineering experience) and the Mgoun traverse are the hardest standard treks. For technical climbing, the Todra Gorge multi-pitch routes are the most demanding.
Not recommended. Even for experienced trekkers, the unmarked paths, remote conditions and refuge logistics make a licensed guide essential. The challenge in Morocco is route-finding and logistics, not technical difficulty.
Jebel Saghro — a 5-7 day desert-mountain traverse through nomadic lands, mild and snow-free when the High Atlas is closed. For experienced mountaineers, winter Toubkal is the technical challenge.
Able to hike 8+ hours on consecutive days at altitude, sure-footed on loose scree and scrambling ground, and comfortable with remote wilderness conditions. Train with loaded hill walks for 6+ weeks beforehand.
