Best Morocco Treks for Beginners: Easy Treks & Preparation

Hassan Ait Baha · 12 min · Trekking

New to trekking? These are Morocco's best beginner treks — easy 2-3 day routes with manageable difficulty, plus how to prepare and what they cost.

Morocco is a great country for a first trek — the guiding and mule system means you carry only a daypack, the routes are varied, and there are options for every fitness level. The mistake beginners make is choosing a trek too hard for their fitness, then not enjoying it. This guide covers the best Morocco treks for beginners, how to prepare, and how to choose a first trek you will actually enjoy.

The Best Beginner Treks

3-Day Toubkal via Azzaden

The best first summit. The gradual approach over two passes builds acclimatisation, the daily effort is manageable, and you still reach 4,167 m. For a fit beginner with hill-walking experience, this is the smart choice over the 2-day route.

2-Day Toubkal (Classic)

A fit beginner can do this in summer, but it is intense — a 1,000 m ascent on day one and a pre-dawn summit push. Choose it only if you are confident in your fitness and short on time. Otherwise, take the 3-day route.

2-3 Day Rif Trek from Chefchaouen

The easiest multi-day option. Lower altitude (peaks around 2,000 m), gentler gradients, green fir forests and Berber village overnights. Perfect for a first trek if you want mountains without altitude concerns.

Dades or Todra Gorge 2-Day Trek

A moderate, low-altitude gorge trek with dramatic scenery and no altitude issues. A good first multi-day trek if you are unsure about a big summit, and easy to combine with a Sahara trip.

How to Choose Your First Trek

Preparation for Beginners

Train for 4-6 weeks: weekly loaded hill or stair climbs building to a 3-4 hour uphill session, plus regular walking. Break in your boots thoroughly — never take new boots on a trek. Read up on altitude if you are going above 3,500 m, and pack layers for cold summit mornings even in summer. See our trekking fitness guide for a full plan.

Guides & Costs

A licensed guide is essential for any beginner trek — they pace the route to your fitness, manage altitude and safety, and handle all logistics. A 2-day Toubkal package runs $180-260 per person all-in; a 3-day route $260-360; a 2-3 day Rif trek $100-160 per person per day. Day hikes run $50-90 including transport.

Best Time for a First Trek

May to October for Toubkal (snow-free). Spring and autumn for the Rif and the gorges. Avoid summer for low routes due to heat, and winter for the high peaks unless you have winter mountaineering skills. September and October are the most forgiving months for a first summit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best first trek in Morocco?

The 3-day Toubkal route via Azzaden — it builds in acclimatisation, spreads the effort across days, and delivers a 4,000 m summit without the intensity of the 2-day version. For something gentler, a 2-day Rif trek from Chefchaouen is the easiest multi-day option.

Can a beginner do the 2-day Toubkal trek?

A fit beginner with hill-walking experience can manage it in summer, but it is intense. If you are unsure about fitness or altitude, choose the 3-day route instead — it is the safer and more enjoyable first summit.

How should a beginner prepare for a Morocco trek?

Train for 4-6 weeks with weekly loaded hill or stair climbs, break in your boots, and read about altitude if you are going above 3,500 m. Start with day hikes if you have never walked in mountains before.

Do beginners need a guide in Morocco?

Yes — for any multi-day trek, a licensed guide is essential for safety, route-finding and logistics. A good guide will pace the trek to your fitness and manage altitude decisions, which is especially valuable for first-timers.

What does a beginner trek in Morocco cost?

A 2-day Toubkal package runs $180-260 per person all-in. A 2-3 day Rif trek runs $100-160 per person per day. Day hikes run $50-90 per person including transport. Guiding is included in all packages.
