Destinations: Essaouira · Duration: 4 hours · Difficulty: Easy · Group size: Up to 10
The argan tree grows almost nowhere on earth except this corner of southwestern Morocco, and the oil pressed from its kernels supports thousands of rural women. This tour takes you behind the souvenir bottles to the cooperatives where that work actually happens.
You travel through the argan forest outside Essaouira — where goats famously clamber into the branches — to a women’s cooperative that keeps the traditional process alive. Members show you each step: cracking the hard nuts between stones, roasting kernels for culinary oil, and grinding by hand until the oil runs.
Beyond the demonstration, your guide explains how the cooperatives give women income, literacy classes and independence. You finish with a tasting of culinary argan, amlou almond spread and cosmetic oils, understanding exactly why this golden liquid is so prized.
Leave Essaouira and drive into the argan groves, stopping to see the climbing goats.
Meet the women and follow the oil from nut to bottle, step by step.
Sample culinary and cosmetic oils while learning about the cooperative’s social work.
Optional fair-price shopping before the drive back to town.
No. Shopping is entirely optional and prices are fair; the focus is understanding the process and the women behind it.
It is common in the argan forest, though goats roam freely so sightings are never guaranteed on a given day.
Culinary argan comes from roasted kernels and tastes nutty; cosmetic argan is unroasted and used for skin and hair. The cooperative demonstrates both.
Yes, and buying directly from the cooperative means more of the money reaches the women who made it.
Argan is a tree nut, so please tell us of allergies; you can still watch the process and skip the tasting safely.
