Berber Weaving & Textile Workshop

Destinations: Marrakech · Duration: 5 hours · Difficulty: Easy · Group size: Up to 10

A Berber rug is a language, its patterns telling of birth, protection, water and womanhood. This workshop takes you to the source, sitting you at the loom beside the women who keep this storytelling craft alive.

You begin by learning to read a textile — the meanings of its symbols, the natural dyes drawn from henna, saffron and indigo, and the difference between a flatweave kilim and a knotted pile rug. Then the weavers hand you the wool.

Under patient guidance you card, spin and weave, feeling how much time and skill each centimetre demands. You leave with a small piece you have woven yourself, a new respect for every rug in the souk, and the knowledge to buy one wisely.
