Everything you need to know about trekking North Africa’s highest peak — before, during and after the summit.
Good walking fitness — not elite fitness. Context: you should be comfortable walking 5–7 hours a day with a light day pack and 600–800m of elevation gain. Regular walking or hiking in the weeks before the trek is the right preparation; raw strength matters less than steady pacing and hydration.

4,167m — the highest peak in North Africa. Context: the standard overnight refuge sits at 3,207m, and the summit is reached by a steep 3–4 hour ascent from there, usually starting before dawn.
Yes — a qualified mountain guide is required for the summit route. Context: beyond the requirement, a local guide is genuinely valuable: navigation in poor weather, altitude judgement, emergency protocols and a real connection with the Berber communities along the route. All our Toubkal treks are guided.
April to June and September to November offer the most stable conditions. Context: spring brings wildflowers and settled weather; autumn gives crisp, clear skies. July–August is warm and suits experienced trekkers; December–March is a winter mountaineering undertaking requiring crampons, an ice axe and a qualified winter guide.
Mild symptoms — headache, fatigue — are common above 3,000m and usually manageable with pacing and hydration. Context: serious altitude sickness requiring descent is uncommon but more likely on the fast 2-day route than the 3-day route, which adds acclimatisation time. Go slowly, drink plenty of water, and tell your guide immediately about any symptoms.

Stiff-soled hiking boots, warm layers (fleece and down jacket), a waterproof shell, hat, gloves, a headtorch and trekking poles. Context: in winter (November–March) crampons and an ice axe are essential. Your pre-departure information includes a full kit list once your booking is confirmed.
A mountain refuge at 3,207m offering dormitory beds, blankets, hot meals and basic facilities. Context: it fills during the popular spring and autumn months, which is one more reason availability is verified before your trek is confirmed.
The 2-day trek ascends to the refuge on day one and summits on day two — the minimum schedule. Context: the 3-day trek adds an acclimatisation day in the Imlil Valley before the climb, which reduces altitude risk and improves the summit experience. Both include mule support for main luggage between Imlil and the refuge.

Yes — with honest fitness preparation. Context: the standard summer route is a non-technical scramble (no ropes) completed by many first-time trekkers each year. The requirements are walking fitness, proper boots and a qualified guide — not mountaineering experience. Winter is a different proposition entirely.
Yes — the classic combination is two days in Marrakech, the 2–3 day trek, then a final evening back in the city. Context: the transfer between Marrakech and Imlil takes about 1.5 hours, and our treks include pickup and return. Ask us to build the full itinerary around your dates.

Mules carry main luggage between Imlil and the refuge (not to the summit). Context: this is a practical and culturally important service that provides income for local mule handlers. Pack a small day pack for the summit day and let the mules take the rest.
Typically between 5:30 and 6:00am, to summit by mid-morning and descend before afternoon cloud builds. Context: you will wake around 5am — the pre-dawn climb by headtorch through silence is one of the most memorable moments of the trek.
Your guide assesses conditions and, if the summit is unsafe, recommends an alternative — a lower walk or a descent — with safety taking absolute priority. Context: high winds, poor visibility or ice without the right equipment are the usual reasons to turn around. If an adjustment affects your itinerary, our team discusses alternatives with you before anything changes.
Yes — travel insurance covering mountain trekking, ideally including rescue and evacuation above 4,000m, is essential for this trek. Context: mountain rescue in Morocco is expensive and not covered without the right policy. Check your policy specifically covers trekking at altitude before you travel.
Send a booking request on the trek page or through Plan My Trip — our team verifies guide, refuge and transport availability for your dates before confirming anything. Context: requests are account-free and carry no obligation; your trek is confirmed only once the itinerary and final price are agreed and payment is verified.
