Zagora Town & Surroundings: Desert Gateway Guide

Omar Benali · 9 min · Destinations

Zagora is the closest Sahara gateway from Marrakech — the Draa Valley, dunes and desert camps in a 3-day trip.

Zagora is the closest Sahara gateway from Marrakech — a desert town at the southern end of the Draa Valley, marked by the famous "52 days by camel to Timbuktu" sign. Its dunes are smaller than Merzouga's Erg Chebbi, but for travellers short on time, Zagora delivers a genuine desert experience — camel trek, camp, starry night — in a 2–3 day trip rather than the 3–4 days Merzouga demands.

The desert and palm oases around Zagora, southern Morocco

At the End of the Draa Valley

Zagora sits where the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river valley, a 200-km ribbon of date palms and kasbahs — finally gives way to open desert. The drive down from Ouarzazate through the palm groves is one of the country's great road journeys, the green oasis narrowing to a thread against the red desert. The town itself is modest, a desert frontier post with a souk and a cluster of hotels and camps.

The Draa Valley Oasis

The Draa Valley is Zagora's great asset — a vast date-palm oasis fed by underground khettara channels, dotted with kasbahs and Berber villages. Driving through it is part of any Zagora trip; the Amezrou palm groves just outside town are a popular camel-trek start point. The dates from the Draa are among Morocco's finest.

Tamegroute & Green Pottery

A short drive from Zagora, Tamegroute is a desert village known for its zawiya (a Sufi religious complex) with an ancient Quranic library, and for its distinctive green-glazed pottery, still made by hand using techniques unchanged for centuries. A visit combines the library, the pottery workshops and a chance to buy directly from the makers.

The Desert & Dunes

Zagora's dunes — at Tinfou and nearby erg fields — are smaller than Merzouga's but still deliver the essential Sahara: a sunset camel trek, a night in a desert camp under a sky thick with stars, and a sunrise over the sand. The experience is authentic and memorable, just on a more intimate scale than Erg Chebbi.

Zagora vs Merzouga

If you have 3+ days, Merzouga's Erg Chebbi is the more dramatic desert. If you have only 2 days, or want a shorter drive, Zagora is the practical choice. Both deliver the camel trek, camp and starry night that define a Sahara trip. Our Zagora Sahara Desert 3-Day Tour and Merzouga 3-Day Sahara Desert Tour cover each route.

When to Visit

October to April is the desert season, with October, November, February and March the best months. May–September is too hot (40–45°C). Winter nights are cold but the camps are heated and the skies are spectacular. Book desert camps well ahead in spring.

How to Book

Our Zagora Sahara Desert 3-Day Tour runs the classic Marrakech–Draa Valley–desert–Marrakech loop. For a comparison or a combined route, tell us your dates and time budget via the plan-my-trip form and we will recommend the right desert gateway.
