Zagora Desert Tour: Complete Guide

Omar Benali · 8 min · Desert

Zagora is the closest Sahara to Marrakech — smaller dunes than Merzouga but an authentic desert experience with a fascinating palm oasis.

Zagora and the Draa Valley

Zagora sits at the northern end of the Draa Valley — one of Morocco's most dramatic landscapes, where 30km of date-palm oasis stretches between canyon walls before giving way to open desert. The valley's ancient ksour (fortified villages) and flowing irrigation channels have sustained Berber and nomad communities here for millennia. The journey from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and winds through Aït Ben Haddou before reaching the valley.

The Zagora desert experience

A sunset camel trek from Zagora village into the desert, a night under the stars at a Berber camp, and a pre-dawn sunrise from the dunes form the core of the Zagora desert experience. The dunes at Erg Chegaga (accessible by 4x4 from Zagora) are more dramatic than those immediately outside town — ask your guide specifically for the Chegaga option on a 3-day trip.

Tamegroute: the green pottery village

Tamegroute is 18km south of Zagora and contains one of Morocco's oldest and most important zawiyas (religious brotherhoods), a historic library of illuminated manuscripts, and the only remaining pottery workshop producing the distinctive green-glazed ceramics of the south. It is a genuine cultural stop, not a tourist attraction, and deserves 1–2 hours.

Best season for Zagora

October to April — with March and October being particularly pleasant. May and September border on uncomfortable (35–40°C); July and August should be avoided (40–45°C). Winter nights (December–February) are cold at the camp (5–10°C) — bring warm layers.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Zagora from Marrakech?

Zagora is approximately 350km from Marrakech — about 7–8 hours by road over the High Atlas. This makes it closer than Merzouga (470km, 9–10 hours) but still requires a proper 3-day minimum itinerary to visit comfortably.

Are Zagora's dunes as impressive as Erg Chebbi (Merzouga)?

No — the dunes at Zagora are more modest in scale than Erg Chebbi's towering 150m dunes. However, the Draa Valley and Tamegroute add significant variety, and the overall desert experience is authentic and less crowded.
