The complete Morocco trekking packing list — clothing, boots, altitude kit, refuge essentials and daypack must-haves, by season and route.
Packing well makes the difference between a trek you enjoy and one you endure. Morocco's mountains demand respect for sun, cold and rough ground, but because a mule carries your main bag on guided treks, you can keep your daypack light while still having everything you need. This is a complete, season-by-season packing list for trekking in Morocco, from day hikes to multi-day high-altitude traverses.
For Toubkal, Mgoun and any high trek, add a proper insulating jacket (down or synthetic) for summit mornings and refuge evenings, where it freezes even in summer. A warm hat and gloves are non-negotiable. For camping treks, bring a sleeping bag rated to -5°C or colder — desert and mountain nights are cold.
A sleeping bag liner for refuges (bedding is provided but a liner is hygienic and warmer). For camping treks, a sleeping bag rated for the season, a headtorch for camp, wet wipes and a small towel, and a dry bag for electronics. Your operator provides tents and sleeping mats on camping treks.
Heavy cotton and jeans (cold when damp, slow to dry), fresh white clothes (dust), valuables you do not need on the mountain, bulky toiletries, and anything you cannot carry in a daypack up a 4,000 m peak. Pack light — the mule carries your main bag but space is limited.
We run guided treks across Morocco with licensed local guides and mule support. Book the Mount Toubkal 2-day trek, or tell us your route and dates through our plan-my-trip form.
Broken-in boots, layered clothing, a warm layer for altitude and nights, sun protection, a headtorch, trekking poles, a sleeping bag liner for refuges, a small first-aid kit, and a daypack. Your main bag travels on the mule, so pack light.
Refuges provide bedding, so a sleeping bag liner is enough for hygiene and comfort. For camping treks (Saghro, Mgoun, Azzaden camping nights), your operator provides tents and sleeping mats, but bring a sleeping bag rated for the season — nights are cold.
Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and aggressive grip — essential on loose scree. They must be broken in before the trek. Trail shoes work for easy day hikes but not for Toubkal or multi-day treks.
At altitude it freezes at night even in summer — the Toubkal Refuge before dawn is cold year-round. In spring and autumn, expect sub-zero summit mornings. Pack a warm hat, gloves and an insulating layer regardless of season for any high trek.
Heavy cotton (stays cold when damp), jeans, fresh white clothes (dust), valuables you do not need, and anything you cannot carry in a daypack up a mountain. Pack light — the mule carries your main bag but space is limited.
