Toubkal in winter is a genuine alpine challenge with crampons and ice axes required. Here is what you need to know.
Between December and February, Toubkal transforms into a genuine alpine mountain. The approach from Imlil (1,740m) may have snow from 1,800m onwards; the refuge zone (3,207m) typically sits under 1–2 metres of snow; and the summit couloir becomes a 45-degree snow or ice slope requiring full crampons and an ice axe for self-arrest. Temperatures at the summit can reach -20°C with windchill.
Avalanche risk exists on several approach slopes above 2,800m following heavy snowfall. A certified mountain guide with local knowledge of current conditions is essential — not optional — for winter Toubkal. Check weather forecasts for 3–5 days before departure; summit attempts in storm conditions or high-wind forecasts should be abandoned. The Refuge du Toubkal is staffed year-round and provides a safe base.
For experienced mountaineers, a winter Toubkal summit is one of the finest alpine-style experiences accessible from Western Europe. The empty slopes, extraordinary views, and genuine technical challenge create a fundamentally different experience from the summer trek. The High Atlas in winter is uncrowded, profoundly beautiful, and rewards preparation with an unforgettable ascent.
The summit typically holds snow from November through April. The heaviest snow falls December–February; March can bring ice on the upper slopes. The mountain is safest to climb October–November and April–June.
Yes. Winter Toubkal requires crampons, ice axe, and the ability to use them on steep terrain. Previous experience with self-arrest and moving on snow slopes is strongly recommended.
Toubkal can be reached in January by experienced climbers with proper equipment and a certified mountain guide. Summit conditions are challenging with sub-zero temperatures (-10 to -20°C overnight) and potential whiteout conditions.
