Toubkal Weather & Seasons: Complete Climate Guide

Weather on Toubkal changes dramatically with altitude and season — knowing what to expect helps you pack correctly and plan realistically.

Spring weather (March–May)

March can still see significant snow above 3,000m, requiring care on icy sections. April sees rapid warming — the main route to the refuge is usually snow-free by mid-April, though the summit plateau may retain ice patches until May. Daytime temperatures in Imlil reach 15–22°C; the refuge hovers between 5–12°C during the day and drops to -2 to 5°C overnight.

Summer weather (June–August)

The warmest and most stable period. Imlil sees 28–35°C in July and August; the refuge is 10–18°C by day and 0–8°C at night. The summit is typically 5–12°C with significant wind chill. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in July — experienced guides start summit bids before dawn to descend before afternoon weather builds.

Autumn weather (September–November)

September mirrors late spring: warm, dry and settled. October brings crisp, clear days ideal for photography and visibility. Overnight temperatures at the refuge fall to -5 to 0°C by late October. November sees the first serious snowfall risk — after a cold snap, the approach can become icy and conditions can deteriorate rapidly.

Winter weather (December–February)

Full winter conditions above 2,500m. The refuge is typically buried in snow and accessible only to properly equipped parties. Summit temperatures regularly drop below -15°C with wind chill. The experience is extraordinary for prepared mountaineers; it is genuinely dangerous for those without crampons, ice axes and winter experience.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature is the Toubkal summit in summer?

Summit temperatures in July–August range from 5–15°C. Wind chill can push the perceived temperature below 0°C even in midsummer. Always carry a warm layer regardless of the season.

Does it rain much on Toubkal?

The High Atlas receives most of its precipitation as snow in winter. Autumn and spring can bring brief rain showers at lower altitudes. Summer thunderstorms occasionally develop in the afternoons. The summit area is generally drier than you might expect.

What wind speeds should I expect?

Wind is the biggest weather hazard on Toubkal. The final 400m of exposed ridge can have gusts above 60km/h in any season. A windproof outer layer is essential year-round.

Is fog a problem on Toubkal?

Low cloud and mist are most common in autumn. They typically clear by mid-morning but can make route-finding difficult in the upper sections. A guide with local route knowledge is the practical solution.
