Toubkal or Sirwa? A comparison of Morocco's highest peak and the remote Sirwa volcano — difficulty, duration, scenery, crowds and costs.
Toubkal and Sirwa are very different treks that suit different trekkers. Toubkal is Morocco's highest and most popular summit — a 4,000 m peak done in 2-3 days. Sirwa is a remote extinct volcano at 3,304 m, done over 3-4 days, with barely another trekker in sight. This comparison helps you choose between the iconic summit and the quiet volcano.
Toubkal is the harder proposition because of the altitude (4,167 m) and the intense 2-day format, though the 3-day route eases this. Sirwa is lower and the altitude is more manageable, but the summit day on loose volcanic scree is long and tiring. Both need solid fitness; Toubkal demands more altitude respect, Sirwa more sure-footedness on scree.
Completely different. Toubkal is alpine — high peaks, scree cirques, Berber villages and summit views across the Atlas. Sirwa is volcanic — dark basalt peaks, lava fields, pinnacles and a transition from High Atlas to Anti-Atlas character. If you want the iconic mountain, Toubkal; if you want something visually different and seldom-seen, Sirwa.
Sirwa wins for solitude. Toubkal is busy, especially on autumn weekends. Sirwa sees very few trekkers — you may have the entire mountain to yourself. For many experienced trekkers, this is the reason to choose Sirwa.
Toubkal is a 2-3 day trek, 90 minutes from Marrakech — easy to fit into a short trip. Sirwa is a 3-4 day trek accessed via Taliouine (saffron country), a longer journey from Marrakech or Agadir. Toubkal is the convenient choice; Sirwa needs more travel time but rewards it with quiet.
Toubkal suits fit trekkers, including determined first-timers on the 3-day route. Sirwa suits fit trekkers who want a quieter, lower-altitude alternative — a good intermediate trek before attempting a 4,000 m peak, or a next destination after Toubkal.
Both run $130-180 per person per day all-in. Toubkal is cheaper in total ($180-360 for 2-3 days) because it is shorter. Sirwa costs $390-720 for 3-4 days. Comparable per day; choose by scenery and solitude preference, not price.

Toubkal is higher at 4,167 m. Sirwa is 3,304 m — an extinct volcano between the High and Anti-Atlas. Sirwa is lower but far less crowded and offers volcanic scenery unlike Toubkal.
Toubkal is more intense (a 4,000 m summit) but shorter. Sirwa is a 3-4 day trek with a long summit day on loose volcanic scree — moderate-to-strenuous, but at lower altitude. Both need solid fitness; Toubkal demands more altitude respect.
Sirwa, by a huge margin. Toubkal is Morocco's most popular trek; Sirwa sees very few trekkers and you may have the mountain to yourself. Choose Sirwa for solitude and a different landscape.
A fit beginner with hill-walking experience can manage Sirwa — it is lower than Toubkal and the altitude is more manageable. But the summit day on volcanic scree is tough. It is a good intermediate trek before attempting Toubkal.
Toubkal: May-October (snow-free). Sirwa: April-June and September-November, with spring best for wildflowers. Both are best avoided in summer heat at lower elevations and in winter snow on the summits.
