Pack light but pack right. This checklist covers everything you need for a successful Toubkal trek without overfilling your bag.
This is the most important item. Stiff-soled leather or synthetic hiking boots with ankle support and a waterproof membrane are essential. Break them in over at least 3–4 long hikes before Toubkal — new boots on a 4,167m summit attempt is a painful mistake. Pack a second pair of light shoes or sandals for the refuge.
Leave heavy camera bodies, laptops, and non-essential electronics at your riad. Cotton clothing of any kind dries slowly and loses insulating value when wet. Jeans are not trekking trousers. Overfilling your bag adds weight to every step and increases fatigue — less is genuinely more on a summit attempt.
Yes — basic trekking poles, gaiters, and cold-weather sleeping bags are available to hire in Imlil. Quality varies; bring your own footwear and technical layers if possible.
A day pack of 8–12kg is typical. Most multi-day routes use mules to carry main bags to the refuge, so you only carry a daypack to the summit. Ask your operator about mule support.
Poles are strongly recommended, especially for the scree descent from the summit. They reduce knee stress significantly and improve stability on loose rock.
Stiff-soled ankle-supporting hiking boots are non-negotiable. Trail runners are insufficient on the loose scree above the refuge. Waterproof membranes (Gore-Tex or equivalent) are worthwhile for spring and autumn.
