Toubkal does not require mountaineering skills, but it does demand genuine fitness. Here is exactly what to build in the months before your climb.
Toubkal is not a technical climb — there is no roping up, no glacier crossing outside winter, and no specialist mountaineering knowledge required between April and October. What it demands is cardiovascular endurance to sustain 5–8 hours of uphill hiking, leg strength for steep scree ascent and descent, and mental resilience when the terrain slows you to 1km per hour near the summit.
Weeks 1–4: base building. Three to four cardiovascular sessions per week (running, cycling, stair climbing) and two strength sessions. Weeks 5–8: add one long hike per week, progressively increasing elevation gain and pack weight. Weeks 9–12: peak preparation with two multi-hour hikes per week on hilly terrain. Taper in the final 7–10 days before departure.
Stair climbing with a loaded pack is the single most transferable exercise. If you have access to hills or mountains, use them. Running builds aerobic base efficiently but does not replicate the specific muscles used in prolonged uphill walking — combine both. Aim to complete at least one 4–6 hour hill walk carrying 8–10kg before your Toubkal attempt.
High-altitude exertion burns significantly more calories than equivalent low-altitude effort. Eat high-carbohydrate meals the evening before summit day; carry 500–600 calories of easily digestible trail snacks (dates, energy gels, nuts, crackers). Hydrate aggressively: 3–4 litres per day on the mountain, including during the pre-dawn summit push when thirst signals can be suppressed by the cold.
You should be able to hike 5–6 hours on consecutive days carrying a daypack of 10–12kg. If you can complete a hilly half-marathon or a long mountain day at home without significant distress, you are in the right range.
A 12-week focused training plan is ideal. If you are already active and hike regularly, 6–8 weeks of specific preparation is sufficient.
Fit beginners who commit to a structured 3-month training programme can absolutely summit Toubkal. The 3-day or 4-day option gives more time and reduces the intensity of each day, making it more accessible.
The scree descent from the summit on day 2 is often the most tiring. Quads, knees and ankles take a lot of impact — downhill strength training in the months before is particularly valuable.
