The Todra Gorge is a 300-metre canyon wall hike in south Morocco — gorge walks, rim trails, climbing, kasbah villages, guides and costs.
The Todra Gorge is one of Morocco's most dramatic natural sights — a canyon where sheer rock walls rise around 300 metres on either side of a narrow river, near the town of Tinerhir in the south. It is usually a photo-stop on the way to the Sahara, but it deserves more: the gorge and its surrounding palmery and plateau offer excellent hiking, and the walls are a major rock-climbing destination. This guide covers the best hikes, the climbing, and how to plan a visit that does the gorge justice.
The classic, easy walk. A paved and dirt path follows the river through the narrowest section of the gorge, between the towering walls — only about 15 metres apart at the narrowest point. It is flat, short (30-45 minutes each way), and spectacular. The walls block the sun for much of the day, making it cool even in summer. Family-friendly and the essential first walk.
Above the gorge, a trail climbs to the plateau for panoramic views over the canyon, the Tinerhir palmery and the Atlas foothills. It is a moderate 2-3 hour round trip with some elevation, best in the morning. The views put the gorge's scale into perspective and are the reward for leaving the easy gorge floor.
The green palmery around Tinerhir, fed by the gorge's river, is laced with paths linking villages, fields and irrigation channels — a gentle, shaded walking landscape very different from the canyon. Longer 2-3 day treks can link the Todra and Dades gorges through these villages and the high ground between them.
The Todra Gorge walls are one of Morocco's premier climbing destinations, with multi-pitch routes on solid quartzite. Climbers come from across Europe for the cooler-month conditions. If you climb, bring a partner and local beta; if you do not, the walls are still worth admiring from below.
Easy to moderate. The gorge-floor walk suits everyone. The plateau climb and village trails need moderate fitness. No high altitude — the challenge is summer heat, so start early. A good option for families and walkers of mixed fitness.
Guesthouses and small lodges line the gorge entrance and the palmery, offering rooms, meals and terrace views of the walls. Staying at the gorge itself lets you walk the canyon at dawn before day-trippers arrive — the best way to experience it.
A guided gorge day hike runs $50-90 per person. 2-3 day treks linking Todra and Dades run $120-180 per person per day all-in. A guide is worthwhile for the plateau climb and any route beyond the gorge floor.
We run guided Todra Gorge day hikes and 2-3 day gorge treks with licensed local guides. Book the Todra Gorge hiking trek, or combine Todra and Dades on a kasbah route through our plan-my-trip form.
Near the town of Tinerhir in south Morocco, east of Ouarzazate, on the route between the Dades Valley and Merzouga. It is usually visited as part of a Marrakech-to-Sahara loop, often combined with the Dades Gorge.
The gorge narrows to a canyon with sheer rock walls rising around 300 metres on each side — one of the most dramatic gorge sections in Morocco. The walking through the narrowest part is short but spectacular.
The gorge-floor walk through the narrow canyon, the climb up to the plateau above for panoramic views, and trails linking the gorge to palmery villages and the Dades Valley. Climbers also come for the multi-pitch routes on the gorge walls.
The gorge-floor walk is easy and flat. The climb to the plateau above is moderate with some elevation. Longer village-linking treks are moderate. Suitable for most walkers; the gorge itself is family-friendly.
Spring and autumn for comfortable temperatures. Summer is very hot in the canyon. Winter is cold at night but hiking is fine on clear days. Climbers favour the cooler months for the rock routes.
