Two of Morocco's most dramatic landscapes — sheer canyon walls and kasbah-dotted gorges — within an hour of each other.
Todra Gorge's narrows are among the most dramatic landscapes in Morocco: 300-metre vertical walls of rose and ochre limestone pressing to within 10 metres of each other, a cold stream running through the base, and shafts of sunlight reaching the gorge floor only at midday. The first 600 metres from the gorge car park is where most visitors go; the real trekking begins beyond.
The trail above the Todra narrows climbs steadily for 3–4 hours into a secondary gorge system of extraordinary beauty — limestone formations, seasonal waterfalls, and nomad encampments in the upper reaches. A full-day trek from the narrows car park to the Tamtattouchte village (15km, 6–7 hours) is one of Morocco's finest long-distance gorge walks.
The Dades Valley runs parallel to Todra an hour further west, defined by a dramatic kasbah-lined road that winds between towering rock formations and terraced fields. May brings the annual Rose Festival at Kelaa M'Gouna, when the valley's rose fields bloom in pink and harvest begins for the essential oil trade.
The classic 2-day circuit from a Merzouga or Ouarzazate base covers both gorges: Todra in the morning, Dades overnight, with a full day in the Dades Valley. Our guided Todra Gorge & Dades Valley Trek includes both sites with a guesthouse night between them.
Yes — Todra is a well-established sport climbing destination with over 150 bolted routes on the canyon walls, ranging from 5a to 8b. Routes are concentrated in the narrows and the nearby smaller gorges. Gear is not available locally; bring your own.
The main gorge narrows are 600m long — you can walk through and back in 30 minutes as a casual visitor. The serious trekking starts beyond the narrows, where trails follow the gorge further into the mountains.
