Tinghir & Todra Gorge Town: Complete Gorge Gateway Guide

Tinghir is the gateway to Todra Gorge — a palm oasis town beside Morocco's most dramatic canyon.

Tinghir is the gateway to the Todra Gorge — a palm-oasis town in south-eastern Morocco where the High Atlas meets the desert fringe, and where the Todra river has carved one of the country's most dramatic canyons. For travellers on the Sahara route, it is a natural overnight stop and a chance to walk between 300-metre cliffs, explore a green oasis and meet the Berber communities of the gorge.

A Palm-Oasis Town

Tinghir sits at the mouth of a vast palm oasis — a green ribbon of date palms, figs and pomegranate that stretches for kilometres along the Todra river. The town itself is a modest regional centre with a souk and a range of guesthouses; the real draw is the oasis and the gorge beyond. A walk or bike ride through the palm groves to the Berber villages is a highlight.

The Todra Gorge

Fifteen kilometres north of Tinghir, the Todra river has cut a canyon through the Atlas with near-vertical walls rising 300 metres. The narrowest section, near Tamtatouchte, is just 10 metres wide — a spectacular 15-minute walk along the riverbed between towering cliffs. The gorge is also a renowned rock-climbing destination, with routes up the walls for experienced climbers.

Walking the Gorge

The standard gorge walk is short and easy — drive or walk the road up the canyon to the narrowest section, then continue on foot along the riverbed. The cliffs glow red in the morning and late afternoon; midday is harsh and crowded. Allow an hour or two. For a deeper experience, our Todra Gorge Hiking 2-Day links gorge walks with oasis villages and a guesthouse overnight.

The Palm Oasis & Berber Villages

Behind Tinghir, the palm oasis hides a string of Berber villages — mud-brick houses, irrigation channels and family gardens. A walk or 4x4 trip through the oasis reveals a way of life shaped by water in an arid land. Our Todra Gorge & Dades Valley Trek combines the gorge with oasis and kasbah walks.

Where to Stay

Tinghir and the gorge entrance have a range of guesthouses and small hotels, many in restored kasbahs with gardens and pools. Staying near the gorge lets you walk it at dawn before the tour groups arrive — a much better experience than a rushed midday stop. Our Dades-Todra Gorges 3-Day includes an overnight in the region.

Combining Todra with the Sahara

Todra Gorge sits on the standard Marrakech-to-Merzouga route, usually visited on day 2 of a 3-day desert tour, between the Dades Valley and Merzouga. It pairs naturally with the Dades Valley, Aït Benhaddou and the Erg Chebbi dunes. For a gorge-focused trip, our Todra Gorge & Dades Valley Trek is built around it.

How to Book

Our Todra Gorge & Dades Valley Trek and Dades-Todra Gorges 3-Day cover the region in depth. Tell us your dates and whether you want a Sahara loop or a gorge-focused trek via the plan-my-trip form, and we will build the right route through Tinghir.
