How to explore South Morocco — the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, the great gorges, UNESCO sites, oases and the gateway to the Sahara.
South Morocco is the land of kasbahs and gorges — a dramatic region of mud-brick fortresses, palm oases, sheer canyons and pre-Saharan hammada, stretching from the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass down toward the Sahara. The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs is its spine, and it's the most scenic and cinematic corner of the country.
The route from Ouarzazate east through the Dades Valley to Tinerhir is lined with kasbahs — fortified mud-brick houses and ksour (fortified villages), some crumbling, some restored, all photogenic. Highlights include Kasbah Amerhidil in Skoura, the Ait Youl kasbah in Dades, and the countless towers silhouetted against the sky. It's a drive to take slowly.
Two great gorges carve through the region. The Dades Valley offers switchback roads, the surreal monkey-finger rock formations and village walks. Todra Gorge is a 300-metre-deep, 10-metre-wide cleft with a river at its base — breathtaking to walk through and a famous climbing destination. See our Dades & Todra guide.
The south is the place to stay in a kasbah-hotel — a restored mud-brick fortress turned guesthouse, with atmospheric rooms, terrace views and traditional food. Skoura, Dades and Tinerhir all have excellent options from budget to boutique. It's the most atmospheric accommodation in Morocco.
Most South Morocco trips continue to Merzouga and Erg Chebbi for a Sahara desert-camp night. A 4-day loop from Marrakech — Ait Benhaddou, Dades, Todra, Merzouga, return — is the classic. Our luxury Marrakech & desert 5-day tour is the premium version.
October to April. Summer is dangerously hot. Winter nights are cold but the kasbahs look magical in the low light. Spring and autumn are ideal.

The scenic route from Ouarzazate through the Dades Valley to Tinerhir, lined with ancient mud-brick kasbahs and fortified villages. It's one of the most dramatic drives in Morocco and the heart of any South Morocco trip.
A Sahara loop from Marrakech through Ait Benhaddou, the Dades and Todra gorges and on to Merzouga takes 3-4 days. To explore the kasbahs properly without rushing to the desert, allow 4-5 days with overnights in Skoura, Dades and Tinerhir.
Ait Benhaddou (UNESCO kasbah), Ouarzazate film studios, the Dades Valley and its monkey-finger rocks, Todra Gorge, the Skoura palmery and Kasbah Amerhidil, and the Fint Oasis. Combine with a Sahara night at Merzouga if time allows.
October to April. Summer is extremely hot (45°C+). Winter nights are cold but days are clear and the light on the kasbahs is beautiful. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots.
