Sirwa Volcano Trekking Guide: High-Altitude Trek & Berber Culture

Omar Benali · 12 min · Trekking

Jebel Sirwa is an extinct volcano between the High and Anti-Atlas — a quiet 3-4 day trek to a 3,304 m summit through Berber villages and volcanic terrain.

Jebel Sirwa is an extinct volcano sitting in the transition zone between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas — a quiet, remote massif that few trekkers reach. At 3,304 m it is high enough to be a real mountain but lower and less crowded than Toubkal, making it an excellent intermediate trek for those who want solitude, volcanic scenery and Berber village culture without the Toubkal crowds. This guide covers the route, the difficulty, and the logistics.

Volcanic terrain in the Sirwa region between the High and Anti-Atlas, Morocco

The Landscape

Sirwa is volcanic — dark basalt peaks, lava fields, and dramatic pinnacles, transitioning from the High Atlas's alpine character to the Anti-Atlas's desert-edge feel. The lower slopes are terraced with barley fields and almond groves around Berber villages; the upper slopes are bare volcanic rock and scree. It is a striking, seldom-seen landscape.

The Route

A typical 3-4 day trek approaches the summit from a village base like Taliouine (famous for saffron) or Anzal, climbing through Berber villages and terraced fields to a high camp, then summiting Sirwa (3,304 m) on a long day on volcanic scree, and descending via a different route. The summit views take in both the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas on a clear day.

Why Trek Sirwa?

Difficulty & Fitness

Moderate-to-strenuous. The summit day is a long climb on loose volcanic scree — tiring and slow-going, but not technical. The altitude (3,304 m) is manageable with a gradual approach but worth respecting. You need solid fitness and sure footing. It is a good step up from day hikes and a quieter alternative to Toubkal.

Accommodation

Berber gite homestays in the approach villages and camping on the high sections with mule-supported tents. The homestays are simple but welcoming; the high camp is under the volcanic peaks. Your guide arranges everything and a cook handles meals.

Guides & Costs

A licensed guide with mule support is essential. A 3-4 day Sirwa trek runs $130-180 per person per day all-in, including the guide, muleteers, gite and camping nights, and all meals. Comparable to other Atlas treks but far quieter.

Best Time

April to June for wildflowers on the volcanic slopes, and September to November for stable weather. Winter can bring snow to the summit; summer is too hot at lower elevations. Spring and autumn make Sirwa an excellent alternative when Toubkal is crowded.
