Sahara Desert Trekking in Morocco: The Complete Guide

Hassan Ait Baha · 18 min · Desert Adventures

Morocco is the most accessible gateway to the Sahara in the world. This guide covers every aspect of planning a genuine desert adventure — from camel trekking routes to bivouac camps under the stars.

The Sahara is one of the world's great landscapes, and Morocco offers the most accessible and best-organised gateway to it anywhere on the continent. From Marrakech, a 9-hour drive east crosses the High Atlas through the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass, descends into the pre-Saharan palmeries of the Draa Valley, and arrives at Merzouga — where the Erg Chebbi dune sea rises abruptly from the hammada in a wall of golden sand 150 metres high and 22 kilometres wide. Arriving at sunset, when the dunes shift from amber to deep rose to violet, is an experience that stays with you for life.

The Two Moroccan Desert Destinations

Merzouga & Erg Chebbi

Merzouga is Morocco's premier desert destination and the base for all our main Sahara departures. The Erg Chebbi dune field is spectacular by any global standard — the dunes are genuinely tall, genuinely remote-feeling, and the surrounding area offers fossils, nomad villages, Gnawa musicians, and 4WD piste routes that push deep into the dune corridors. The journey from Marrakech takes 9–10 hours, which is why we recommend a minimum of 3 days.

Zagora & Erg Chigaga

Zagora is in the Draa Valley, 5–6 hours from Marrakech, and is a practical option for those with limited time. The town itself is a relaxed palm-grove oasis. The nearby Tinfou dunes are modest, but the excursion to Erg Chigaga — a 2-hour 4WD drive across the hammada — reaches a genuine large dune field that rivals Erg Chebbi. A 3-day Zagora tour is the minimum to do the journey justice.

Camel Trekking: What to Expect

Dromedary camels (single-humped) are the traditional transport of the Saharan nomads and your primary mode of travel through the dune fields. The ride is initially surprising — camels kneel to mount, then stand in a two-stage lurch that catches first-timers off guard — but once you find your balance, the gentle swaying rhythm is deeply meditative.

Standard camel trek durations range from 45 minutes (sunset ride to camp) to 3–4 hours (deep dune crossing). Our guides lead the camels on foot, setting a steady pace. Camel saddles are padded, but long sessions can be hard on the inner thighs — bring comfortable trousers and stand up occasionally to stretch.

Desert Camping

Overnight camping in the dunes is the centrepiece of any Sahara tour. Our camps are permanent seasonal installations with traditional Berber tents furnished with proper beds and blankets — not sleeping on the floor. Facilities include a shared toilet and solar-powered lighting. The kitchen tent serves traditional Moroccan dinners (tagine, harira, fresh bread) cooked over a wood fire.

After dinner, the guides typically lead a short walk to the top of a dune to watch the night sky. This is when the Sahara reveals its most extraordinary face — absolute darkness, absolute silence, and a sky ablaze with stars from horizon to horizon. If you are lucky, you might see a meteor shower; the Sahara is one of the world's best stargazing destinations.

Different Sahara Routes

3-Day Merzouga Sahara Tour

The most popular route. Marrakech → Atlas Mountains → Draa Valley → Merzouga (overnight) → sunrise camel trek → desert camp (overnight) → return to Marrakech. Covers the highlights with a proper overnight in the dunes.

4-Day Sahara Grand Tour

Adds an extra night at Merzouga with a full day of desert activities: sandboarding, fossil hunting, visit to a Gnawa village, 4WD dune excursion. The extra time transforms the experience from a rushed desert tick to a genuine immersion.

5-Day Grand Sahara Journey

The complete desert experience: full Atlas crossing at Tizi n'Tichka, overnight at Ait Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate, two nights in the dunes, Todra Gorge visit on the return. The premium itinerary for travellers who want to understand the whole arc from the mountains to the desert.

Best Seasons

October to April is the ideal window for Sahara trekking. Daytime temperatures range from 18–28°C, nights are cool (5–12°C in winter), and the light at sunrise and sunset is extraordinary.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better — Merzouga or Zagora for the Sahara?

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) is the classic choice: towering golden dunes rising 150 m, genuine remote desert feel, and the most authentic overnight camps. Zagora is closer to Marrakech (5–6 hours vs 9 hours) but the dunes are smaller. If you have time, go to Merzouga. If time is the constraint, Zagora gives a good desert experience.

Is Sahara desert trekking safe?

Yes, with a reputable operator and licensed guide. Our desert guides are born in the region and have decades of experience navigating the dune fields, managing the temperature extremes, and ensuring group safety. We use established camp routes and always have emergency communication equipment.

What is sleeping in the Sahara actually like?

Magical. Far from light pollution, the stars are extraordinary — the Milky Way is clearly visible most nights. Temperatures drop sharply after sunset even in summer, so the nights are comfortable. Sounds are minimal; the silence of the dunes is one of the most unusual sensory experiences you will have anywhere.

When is the Sahara too hot to visit?

June, July and August are genuinely extreme at the desert level — daytime temperatures regularly exceed 45°C at Merzouga, making active trekking uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. The camel rides, early morning walks, and sunset dune watching are still possible with careful planning, but it is not the best season for active desert trekking.
