Sahara Desert Complete Guide: Merzouga, Agafay, Zagora & Desert Camps

Hassan Ait Baha · 25 min · Sahara Desert Guide

The complete Sahara guide: which desert to choose, what a desert camp is really like, camel trekking, stargazing, seasons, packing and booking.

The Sahara is the experience most travellers come to Morocco for — camel treks across orange dunes, silence, stars and a night in a desert camp. But "the Sahara" in Morocco actually means three very different destinations, each with its own character and logistics. This guide helps you choose and plan.

The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga in the Moroccan Sahara

Merzouga & Erg Chebbi — The Iconic Sahara

This is the Sahara of your imagination. Erg Chebbi is a 28km-long field of dunes reaching 150 metres, glowing orange at sunrise and sunset. Merzouga is the village at its edge, a 9-10 hour drive from Marrakech (usually broken with an overnight in the Dades Valley or Ouarzazate). The reward is the most dramatic dunes in Morocco and the widest range of desert camps, from budget to luxury. Allow 3-4 days from Marrakech. See our Merzouga & Erg Chebbi guide.

Agafay — The Quick Desert Escape

Agafay is a rocky stone desert just 45 minutes from Marrakech. There are no towering dunes, but the lunar landscape, Atlas backdrop and proximity make it perfect for a sunset camel ride, dinner under the stars or a single overnight in a luxury camp. If you don't have time for Merzouga, Agafay is the answer. See our Agafay Desert guide.

Zagora — The Closer, Quieter Option

Zagora is the closest "Sahara" to Marrakech (about 7 hours), with smaller dunes and a more windswept, austere feel. It suits travellers with limited time who want a desert night without the long drive to Merzouga. For the truly remote dunes, Erg Chigaga beyond Zagora is spectacular but requires a 4x4 and 2+ days. See our desert comparison guide.

Desert Camps: What to Expect

A desert camp is the heart of the Sahara experience. You arrive by camel (or 4x4) in the late afternoon, watch the sunset from the dunes, eat a tagine dinner, listen to Berber drumming around the campfire, and sleep in a tent. Sunrise over the dunes is the highlight. Camp quality varies enormously — our tours clearly state whether you're in a standard or luxury camp.

Camel Trekking & Stargazing

The camel trek into the dunes (usually 45-90 minutes) is the classic Sahara moment. At night, far from city lights, the desert sky is astonishing — the Milky Way is clearly visible and shooting stars are common. Bring a headlamp, warm layers and a camera. Our camel trekking tips article covers the practicalities.

Best Time to Visit the Sahara

October to April is ideal. Summer (June-August) is dangerously hot in the daytime. Winter nights are cold (near freezing) but days are pleasant. Spring and autumn give the best balance of comfortable days and bearable nights.

Frequently asked questions

Which Sahara desert should I visit — Merzouga or Zagora?

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) for the iconic towering orange dunes up to 150m high — this is the Sahara of postcards. Zagora (Erg Chigaga is further; Zagora itself has smaller dunes) is closer to Marrakech and quieter but less dramatic. For the full Sahara experience, choose Merzouga.

Is Agafay a real desert?

Agafay is a rocky desert (hammada), not a sand-dune Sahara. It's 45 minutes from Marrakech, making it perfect for a sunset dinner or overnight without the long drive. For real sand dunes you need Merzouga or Zagora.

What is a desert camp like?

Camps range from basic shared tents with shared toilets to luxury en-suite tents with real beds, hot showers and fine dining. All include dinner, breakfast, camel trek and often Berber music around the fire. Nights are cold even in summer — bring warm layers.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara?

October to April. Days are warm, nights cold but manageable. Avoid July and August when daytime temperatures exceed 45°C. December-February nights can drop near freezing — pack accordingly.

Can I do a Sahara trip in 2 days?

A 2-day trip only reaches Zagora or Agafay. For Merzouga and Erg Chebbi you need at least 3 days from Marrakech due to the drive. From Fez, Merzouga is closer and doable in 2-3 days.
