October to April is the Sahara's sweet spot. Here is what each season actually delivers in the Moroccan desert.
The finest months in the Moroccan Sahara. Daytime temperatures sit between 22–30°C — warm enough for dune climbing and camel treks without heat distress. Nights are cool at 8–15°C: comfortable for sleeping under the stars without serious cold. The post-Ramadan and post-summer peak means prices are reasonable and camps are busy but not overwhelmed.
Winter is an underrated time in the Sahara. The sky is intensely blue, visibility to the horizon is exceptional, and the dunes are at their least crowded. Daytime is pleasant at 15–22°C; nights are cold (0–8°C) and require a proper sleeping bag. The stars are extraordinary in the clear winter air.
March and April replicate October's conditions with the added bonus of occasional desert wildflowers after winter rains. The Erg Chebbi dunes look their most golden in the softer spring light, and Saharan sunrises in April are among the most photographed in Morocco.
Daytime temperatures climb rapidly through May (35–40°C) and reach their peak in July and August (43–48°C). Camel treks are limited to very early morning and sunset in these months. While camps remain open, the experience is significantly diminished by the heat. Unless you have a specific reason to visit in summer, plan your Sahara trip between October and April.
January daytime temperatures around Merzouga average 15–20°C — very pleasant for walking and camel trekking. Nights drop to 0–5°C, so a warm sleeping bag and extra layers for the camp are essential.
Daytime temperatures in August regularly exceed 45°C in the Merzouga area. Camel treks are restricted to very early morning or late evening. It is possible but uncomfortable; most experienced travellers avoid July and August.
The Christmas–New Year week is the busiest period in the Merzouga desert. Luxury camps fill months ahead. Book well in advance, and expect more company on the dunes than in November or March.
