Four days is the sweet spot for a Sahara trip — the dunes, a desert camp, and time to actually experience the desert.
Four days is the ideal length for a Sahara trip from Marrakech. The 3-day version is the classic, but the extra day lets you actually spend time in the dunes — a 4x4 excursion to nomad families, sandboarding, a sunrise hike to a remote dune — rather than treating the desert as a single overnight. This is the itinerary we recommend to travellers who want to experience the Sahara, not just photograph it.
Depart Marrakech and cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping at the UNESCO ksar of Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Continue through the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" to the Dades Valley for the night, where the gorge glows red at sunset.
A morning stop at the dramatic Todra Gorge, then the drive east to Merzouga, where the Erg Chebbi dunes rise over 150 metres on the horizon. Swap the vehicle for a camel and trek into the dunes for sunset, arriving at a desert camp for a Berber dinner, music around the fire and a night under the stars.
The day that justifies the 4-day format. Watch sunrise over the dunes, then choose: a 4x4 excursion to nomad families and the Khamlia village of Gnawa musicians, sandboarding down the big dunes, a guided hike to a remote corner of the erg, or simply resting at camp. A second night in the desert, ideally at a different camp, deepens the experience.
A final desert sunrise and breakfast, then the long drive back to Marrakech via the Atlas, arriving by evening. The return can be routed through the Draa Valley and Zagora for variety if you prefer a different road back.
A standard camp offers shared or private Berber tents with communal bathrooms — authentic and comfortable. A luxury camp adds private ensuite tents with real beds, hot showers, full dinner service and often a pool. The luxury upgrade is the single biggest comfort decision on a Sahara trip; we offer both and can mix them across your nights.
Our Merzouga Desert 4-Day Tour runs this itinerary for $345 per person. Choose standard or luxury camp at booking. Private departures are available year-round. Book on the tour page or tell us your dates and preferred camp standard via the plan-my-trip form.
Yes. Four days is the sweet spot for a Sahara trip from Marrakech — enough for the overland journey through the Atlas and gorges, a night or two in the desert, and time to actually experience the dunes rather than just driving to them and back.
Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou & Dades Valley (night 1) → Todra Gorge & Merzouga with a camel trek and desert camp (night 2) → a full day at Erg Chebbi for dune exploration, a 4x4 to nomad families, or sandboarding (night 3) → return to Marrakech (day 4). The extra day over the 3-day tour lets you go deeper at the dunes.
Our Merzouga Desert 4-Day Tour is $345 per person including private/shared transport, kasbah and desert camp accommodation, camel trek, breakfast and dinner daily, and a licensed guide. Excluded: lunches, drinks, tips and travel insurance.
Camps range from simple shared Berber tents to luxury camps with private ensuite bathrooms, proper beds and full dinner service. All include a sunset camel trek, a Berber dinner and breakfast, and an extraordinary night sky. We offer both standard and luxury camp options.
October to April offers the best desert weather — warm days and cool but bearable nights. Avoid July and August when daytime desert heat is extreme. Winter nights are cold but the camps are well heated and the skies are spectacular.
