Road Cycling Morocco: Routes & Tips

Karim Zouiten · 7 min · Cycling

Morocco's paved mountain passes and coastal roads offer some of the finest road cycling accessible from Europe.

Morocco's road cycling credentials

The High Atlas passes represent some of the most dramatic road cycling in Africa: long paved climbs rising 1,500–2,000m above the valley floor, switchback descents through cedar forest, and summit views stretching to the Sahara. Combined with warm weather from March through November and minimal cycling-specific traffic on mountain roads, Morocco delivers a compelling road cycling destination within 3 hours of Europe.

Key road cycling routes

Road conditions

Main mountain pass roads are well-maintained tarmac; secondary roads vary from excellent to potholed. Late winter (February–March) sometimes brings road debris or cracked sections after cold snaps — check locally before major ascents. Our support vehicle carries spare wheels, tools, and emergency water throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to road cycle on Moroccan highways?

The main routes (N-roads and RN-roads) carry fast traffic including heavy trucks — not recommended for leisure cycling. Our road cycling uses secondary P-roads and mountain pass roads that carry minimal traffic and have reasonable asphalt quality.
