Ourika is waterfalls and riverside cafes; Imlil is Berber villages and Toubkal foothills. Here is how to choose.
Ourika Valley and Imlil are the two most popular Atlas Mountains day trips from Marrakech, and they suit different travellers. Ourika is a lush riverside valley with waterfalls and swimming; Imlil is a mountain village and the gateway to Toubkal trekking. This guide compares them so you can choose the right mountain day.
Ourika is a green river valley with terraced villages, riverside cafes and the Setti Fatma waterfalls — lush and accessible. Imlil sits higher, at 1,740m, surrounded by walnut groves and big mountain peaks, with a more rugged, alpine feel. Ourika is a valley; Imlil is a mountain village.
Ourika's walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls is gentle and short — suitable for most fitness levels and families, with swimming stops. Imlil's day hike climbs through Berber villages to viewpoints and the Sidi Chamharouch shrine — a more sustained mountain walk. For an easy nature day, Ourika; for a real hike, Imlil.
Both offer Berber village life. Imlil is more traditionally a trekking village, with muleteers and mountain guides. Ourika has more riverside cafes and a women's argan cooperative stop. For authentic mountain village atmosphere, Imlil; for a relaxed cultural stop, Ourika.
If you want an easy, scenic day with waterfalls and a swim, choose Ourika. If you want a mountain hike with village culture and big views — or you are considering a Toubkal trek — choose Imlil. Both are excellent; they simply serve different moods.
Our Ourika Valley & Waterfalls Day Trip and Imlil Village & Toubkal Foothills Day Hike are the two options. For a longer mountain experience, our Atlas Mountains Three Valleys Day Trek links the region. Tell us your fitness and interests via the plan-my-trip form and we will pick the right mountain day.
Ourika is the easier day — a gentle riverside walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls with minimal climbing. Imlil involves more ascent on mountain trails through Berber villages, though the standard day hike is still moderate. For a relaxed day, Ourika; for a real mountain walk, Imlil.
Ourika — the Setti Fatma waterfalls are the highlight, with pools to swim in. Imlil's appeal is mountain scenery and village life rather than waterfalls. If swimming and waterfalls matter, choose Ourika.
Imlil is the trekking gateway — it leads to Toubkal and multi-day Atlas treks. Ourika is more of a scenic valley day trip. If you want a proper hike or to progress to Toubkal, start in Imlil.
Both are about 60–90 minutes from Marrakech. Ourika is south of Marrakech up the Ourika Valley; Imlil is also south, at the end of the road into the High Atlas. Both are easy day trips.
It is possible but rushed — they are in adjacent valleys but the connecting mountain roads are slow. Better to choose one per day, or do a three-valleys trek that links the region. We can build a custom day if you want both.
