Ourika or Azzaden? A comparison of the two Atlas valleys for trekking — difficulty, crowds, scenery, access, guides and costs to help you choose.
Ourika and Azzaden are two Atlas valleys on opposite sides of the Toubkal massif, and they suit very different trekkers. Ourika is the closest, most popular valley — great for day hikes and families. Azzaden is the quiet, remote side — best for multi-day traverses and solitude. This comparison helps you choose.
Ourika is easy to moderate — the lower waterfall walk suits most fitness levels, with light scrambling to the upper falls. Azzaden is moderate-to-strenuous — multi-day traverses with high passes above 3,600 m and long days. Ourika for casual and family hiking; Azzaden for committed trekkers.
The biggest difference. Ourika is the most popular Atlas day trip and gets busy, especially on weekends — go midweek and early. Azzaden sees a fraction of the visitors; on a multi-day traverse you may meet almost no one. Choose Azzaden for solitude.
Both are beautiful but different. Ourika is a green, river-cut valley with waterfalls, swimming pools and riverside cafes — accessible mountain charm. Azzaden is wilder — dramatic gorges, high passes, remote Berber villages and big mountain scenery. Ourika for easy beauty; Azzaden for wilderness.
Ourika is 90 minutes from Marrakech and ideal for day trips. Azzaden is on the far side of the massif, takes longer to reach, and is best for 3-5 day treks rather than day hikes. If you have a day, Ourika; if you have 3-5 days and want a traverse, Azzaden.
A guided Ourika day trip runs $50-90 per person including transport. An Azzaden multi-day traverse runs $130-200 per person per day all-in. Ourika is the budget day option; Azzaden is a bigger trek investment for a much quieter experience.
Choose Ourika for an easy day hike from Marrakech with waterfalls and swimming, especially with family or limited time. Choose Azzaden for a multi-day traverse with solitude and high passes, especially if you have already done the direct Toubkal route. Many trekkers do Ourika as a warm-up, then an Azzaden traverse.
We run guided Ourika day trips and Azzaden multi-day treks with licensed local guides. Book the Ourika Valley day trip, or tell us you want an Azzaden traverse through our plan-my-trip form.
Ourika is closer — about 60 km and 90 minutes. Azzaden is on the far side of the Toubkal massif and takes longer to reach. Ourika is the easier day trip; Azzaden is better for multi-day treks.
Azzaden, by a wide margin. Ourika is the most popular Atlas day trip from Marrakech and gets busy, especially on weekends. Azzaden sees a fraction of the visitors — choose it for solitude.
Azzaden is best for multi-day treks (3-5 days) crossing the valley and over high passes. Day hikes are possible from the valley but less rewarding than the traverses. For a day hike, Ourika is the better choice.
Ourika — the lower waterfall walk is easy and family-friendly with swimming and cafes. Azzaden is more remote and better suited to trekkers doing multi-day routes. Choose Ourika for families.
Azzaden — the multi-day traverse over the Tizi Ouanoums pass (3,684 m) with an optional Toubkal summit is a superb quiet route for experienced trekkers. Ourika is better for day hikes and first-timers.
