The Ourika Valley's Berber villages offer riverside life, waterfalls and a direct window into Atlas culture.
The Ourika Valley is the closest the High Atlas comes to Marrakech — under an hour's drive south, a green river valley of Berber villages, terraced fields and waterfalls. It is the most popular Atlas day trip, and for good reason: it delivers genuine mountain culture, riverside walks and a waterfall hike in a single, easy day from the city.
The Ourika river cuts south from Marrakech into the High Atlas, and along its banks sit a string of Berber villages — Setti Fatma, Aghbalou, Tighdouine — each a cluster of flat-roofed mud-brick houses terraced into the valley walls. Residents farm barley, vegetables and walnut trees on irrigated plots, and run small riverside cafés and argan cooperatives that welcome visitors.
The Ourika Valley is one of the best places to visit a women's argan cooperative, where Berber women crack argan nuts by hand and press them into oil for food and cosmetics. Buying directly from the cooperative ensures the women receive a fair income — a meaningful way to support mountain communities. Most Ourika day trips include a cooperative stop.
Setti Fatma, at the head of the valley, is the standard day-trip destination. Above the village, a guided hike of 1–1.5 hours climbs to a series of seven cascading waterfalls (the lower ones are the most visited), with pools to swim in and rocks to picnic on. The hike is moderate — sturdy shoes and water are essential. Our Ourika Valley & Waterfalls Day Trip is built around it.
Beyond the waterfalls, the valley's real draw is its living Berber culture. A stop at a family home for mint tea, a home-cooked tagine lunch, and a walk through terraced villages offer a direct window into Atlas life that no museum can match. Our Atlas Mountains Three Valleys Trek includes a tagine lunch in a local home.
Lunch at a riverside café — tagine or brochettes on a terrace over the rushing river — is an Ourika tradition. The cafés are simple but the setting is unbeatable, especially in spring when the river runs full. Most day trips build in a long lunch stop.
Spring is the valley's best season — green terraces, wildflowers and full waterfalls. Autumn is nearly as good, with comfortable walking weather. Summer is hot but the river and pools are refreshing; arrive early. Winter is quiet and cold at altitude, with snow on the higher peaks. Avoid weekends in high season, when the valley gets busy with Marrakech day-trippers.
Our Ourika Valley & Waterfalls Day Trip is the classic day from Marrakech, and the Ourika Valley Waterfall Trek 2-Day adds an overnight for deeper exploration. Tell us your dates and group size via the plan-my-trip form and we will build the right Ourika experience.
The Ourika Valley runs south from Marrakech into the High Atlas, following the Ourika river for about 60 km to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. It is the closest genuine mountain valley to Marrakech — under an hour's drive — making it the most popular Atlas day trip.
The valley is home to Berber (Amazigh) communities living in riverside villages of flat-roofed mud-brick houses, farming terraced plots of barley, vegetables and walnut trees. Tourism is a major income supplement, especially the women's argan cooperatives.
Setti Fatma is the village at the head of the Ourika Valley, with a series of seven cascading waterfalls above it. A guided hike up to the lower falls (about 1–1.5 hours) is the standard day-trip highlight, with pools to swim in and riverside lunch.
