How to visit the Ourika Valley — the easiest Atlas day trip from Marrakech, with waterfall hikes, Berber villages, riverside cafes and practical tips.
The Ourika Valley is the easiest taste of the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech — a green river valley climbing into the High Atlas, dotted with Berber villages, riverside cafes and waterfalls. In an hour you trade the medina's chaos for mountain air and the sound of running water.
The classic Ourika walk. From Setti Fatma village you follow a path up the gorge to a series of waterfalls. The first two are easy and popular; the higher falls require scrambling over rocks and a local guide is recommended. Allow 2-3 hours round trip. Wear sturdy shoes — the rocks are slippery.
The Ourika is home to Amazigh (Berber) communities who have farmed these terraces for centuries. Many villages are only accessible on foot. A local guide opens doors — you can visit a traditional home, see how argan oil is pressed, and share mint tea with a family. This is the real value of a guided trip over going alone.
Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer is hot in the valley but the river pools are refreshing. Winter is cold and the upper trails can be icy. After heavy rains the gorge can flash-flood — check conditions and never camp in the riverbed.
Dozens of riverside cafes line the lower valley, serving tagines, grilled meat and mint tea on terraces over the stream. Our day trips include lunch at a well-chosen local spot. For a longer stay, a few small guesthouses offer overnight accommodation.
Our Ourika Valley day trip includes private transport, a local guide and lunch. Book an Ourika Valley tour and see the Atlas in a day.
About 60 km and a 1-1.5 hour drive. It's the closest Atlas valley to Marrakech, which makes it the most popular day trip.
Yes, in the pools below the Setti Fatma falls in spring and summer when the water is lower. The water is cold and the rocks are slippery — wear water shoes and take care.
Yes — the lower valley is flat and easy, riverside cafes are relaxed, and the walk to the first waterfalls is short. The upper falls require a steeper scramble that suits older children.
Spring (March-May) for green hills and wildflowers, and autumn (September-November) for clear weather. Avoid heavy rain periods when flash floods are possible in the gorge.
