The Ourika Valley is the closest proper mountain hiking to Marrakech — green, scenic and accessible for all fitness levels.
The Ourika river runs through a dramatic green valley just an hour from Marrakech, dropping from the High Atlas peaks past walnut orchards, Berber villages, and roadside terrace restaurants. It is the most accessible High Atlas hiking from Marrakech and ideal for a first taste of Morocco's mountains without the commitment of a Toubkal summit.
The valley's signature hike is the scramble to the Setti Fatma cascades — a series of seven waterfalls above the village at the valley's end. The lower waterfall (20 minutes from Setti Fatma village) is accessible to almost everyone; the upper cascades require a confident scramble over rocks but reward with cool pools and spectacular views. Allow 2–3 hours for the full waterfall circuit.
En route to Setti Fatma, the Ourika Valley contains several women's argan cooperatives where you can see oil production and purchase genuine products. Berber village trails branch off the main road into the hillside communities above — these short detours (30–60 minutes) are among the most culturally rewarding walks in the Atlas.
Wear closed shoes (not sandals) even for the gentle riverside path; the waterfall scramble requires grip. Arrive before midday on weekends when the valley road traffic is heavy. Our Ourika Valley day trip includes all transport, a local guide, and a traditional Berber lunch beside the river.
Yes — the main valley path to Setti Fatma is a gentle riverside trail accessible for children aged 6+. The waterfall area itself involves a 20-minute steeper scramble that older children enjoy.
The Ourika Valley entrance is approximately 35km from Marrakech city centre — about 45 minutes by road. Setti Fatma at the end of the main road is 65km, about 1 hour 30 minutes.
